Surge Protector/EMS Need
I have, as have others on this forum and other forums, posted my feelings concerning having at least a surge protector and better yet a EMS system while hooked up to ANY shore power including power at our homes. Some responses to this position have been "I have been RV'ing for 20 years and never had a problem" and I'm sure this is correct, but it only takes once.
Yesterday morning at the park where I am hosting our power system on one circuit had a bit of a problem, it lost the neutral. Immediately this sent 240 volts through the circuit to all on this particular circuit. My EMS system shut me down immediately - no damage done. One other RV on this circuit didn't have any protection. He lost, as far as he knows right now: inverter, two a/c's, one television, and more is being analyzed today. I don't know the types/brands of protection several others had, but they all had something as they didn't have any damage either.
The park had an electrician come in to analyze and fix the problem and all was back to normal in a few hours, except for the unlucky guy who had been gambling for 20 years. He is on an extended vacation with his family and they are currently in a motel while his RV is being worked on and their vacation is on hold. Who knows how long.
I never hook up without my EMS - not EVER.

Not saying one isn't important but in this particular case the guy that gambled for 20 years is getting new A/C units,converter and a TV courtesy of the Campground

I can't comment on the CG in question, but depending on the CG I've seen statements that remove them from being responsible for electrical damage. As an example here is one exclusion from Pine Lake Campground and RV Park:
"The Park assumes NO responsibility for any damage to customer electric devices, appliances, converters, etc. used in the campground. We suggest that you use “surge protection devices” on all electronic equipment."

I guess I'm just skeptical. If I am hooked up to a 120 volts source, that consists of a neutral and one side of the 220, How do I get 220 in my 120 volt system? I could understand it if the other side of the 220 came in contact with the neutral, but electrically I don't see how losing the neutral has any effect except losing power to the system. Can someone explain this?

While the park may have posted the standard, innocuous "Not resposnsible" warning, these, as a rule, hold no water in the legal world. So, either the insurance company, or his lawyer will be seeking reimburement for damages paid if it's confirmed that the surge was caused by negligence on the part of the park! And, if he had replacement cost on his RV policy, he is indeed getting all new appliances, wiring, etc. for the cost of his deductbile!

My electrical knowledge is gonna show, but how does one "lose the neutral"? Was someone else doing some electrical work that caused this or what ?

Would a regular surge protector have protected him? Or would he have needed an EMS?
I'm pretty clueless with the electrical stuff, but I'm interested in being protected from the most common types of problems. I don't really have the coin to drop on a full EMS system at this point, though I would like to do so in the future... Wondering if a surge protector would be adequate for most problems; at least I could get SOME protection?

ems vs surge
A power surge be it a burst of power or a brown out would be covered by a simple surge, I belive but would certainly be covered by the ems. It will not let "bad" power passed it. I've stayed at two different relatives driveways who had mis-wired outlets in their garages and my ems would not let it into my rv. Both cases they said that everyything they plugged into those outlets "worked".
I won't connect anywhere, except my home, without one, only because I've already checked my outlet.

I wired in a whole house surge protector. It is the same one that I have on my house. So far we have not had any problems (at home or TT). I know there were a few surges, but the system handled it properly. I believe it was around $60 at Lowes/Home Depot.
Here is a picture where I mounted it. It is on the right side under the 4x4 electrical box.

To another post, I wouldn't hold my breath getting replacements from a state park.

My new surge protector arrived in the mail today! I lost a converter and a microwave in a mis-wired outlet incident last month.

I was in a campground in the rushmoore area a couple of weeks ago. Something happened to the pole I was on and it fried my autoformer and my ems. Progressive sent me a new board, had to send the old board back. Hughes fixed the unit and its on its way back now. I checked the pole and there was voltage to ground from both hot and neutral. Told one of the work campers but it was fine before he could check it. All in all im out $65 in shipping and some time but it could have been worse.
