surprising tire temperature

Started getting the trailer ready for winterizing yesterday by putting some things in their proper place. My infrared gun stays in the truck but i bring in the house after camping season ends. I decided to check my tires on the trailer just out of curiosity to make sure the gun is still functional. The trailer hasn't moved in a week, its only 70 deg F but sunny. The sunny side tires read 105 deg F. I was quite surprised they would get that hot. Now I won't be to concerned when i see them 125 deg on an 85 deg day when we make a trailer stop going to the campsite.

And the sunny side even felt quite warm to touch.

I have noticed quite a difference when checking temperatures on the sunny side while travelling but was surprised to see how hot they would get when idle.

It will make a big difference in the sun - black absorbs the heat. I used to drag race, and we had to cover the tires that are in the sun while waiting in the staging lanes because the pressure will change so much...

He's referring to the surface rubber which could be that hot. Those of us using a TPMS system is measuring air temperature insde the tire.

Point of reference. On a 99 degree day this summer my sunny side tires were reading 109 running 63MPH. They usually run 10-15 degrees above air temp. Warmer when stopped on hot pavement.

I understand he is talking about surface rubber temperature - my point was that tires will absorb heat and pressure will go up while sitting still in the sun - even when not actually driving.
