The Wind Sucks!

So, after achieving 10.5 MPG pulling the 20 MRB to the east coast from Seattle, we are headed home and now getting 8 MPG due to the constant wind. Some gusts are reported to be at 60 mph.

This is traveling the NY Thruway. Surprising how tiring it gets fighting the steering wheel.

I think we all know what you are experiencing, Murff. Safe travels the rest of the way home.
Oh, I don't know what speed you travel, but you might consider dropping down to 55mph or so. That always help my mileage out when traveling into the wind.
Happy RVing,
Jeff

I live just off the thruway and travel it often. My experience is very similar to what you describe. I do much better traveling southbound then I do North. Headwind and hills drop my mileage considerably...

Getting an early start seems to help.
Winds tend to increase as day temperature rises.
Going to CA on I-40, we would try to beat the winds by leaving at 6:00am and getting to next stop by 1:00p

Safe travels. Keep it bewteen the lines :-)

I understand! A couple weeks ago we got into some really bad headwind. Had my lowest mpgs ever, 5.28, och.

I got into a sway issue as I entered a bridge over a lake. Scare the bagezzers out of me.

If it gets too bad just find a good spot to stop and wait it out for a bit. We had to do that last fall on our way out of Utah and into Idaho. Ran into the tail end of a particularly nasty storm - swirling gusting winds from all directions. As you pointed out - it's a tiring chore to stay between the lines. Wears you down quickly. We slowed down to 55 for a while but eventually just gave up and pulled in early at a rest area to wait it out. Didn't get much sleep though because the gusts were really rocking the trailer around. By early morning it had dissipated enough that we felt comfortable hitting the road again.

Safe travels!

Yeah that wind can be something, I would just slow down or like someone said to pull over, a little bit of more time will save your life or your love ones.

I know the thruway quite well. Just got back from pulling my trailer up into the Adirondacks from Long Island. Always seems to be windy heading north on the Thruway. You want a real challenge try pulling a trailer over the George Washington bridge in heavy traffic and pouring rain. [emoji12] Not to mention the roadway itself barely qualifying as a road with all the potholes, bumps and uneven winding lanes.

It seems that if I travel West, the wind blows from the West and if I travel East, the wind comes from the East, and if I travel North...

I hate the Thruway.. Been travelling it since 1954, From NYC to the PA State line it all sucks.

Now we use 17 and 86 more scenic and not a wallet buster.

It's rare that I get to tow with no wind, even rarer to have the wind pushing us.

Last Thursday we went to the UP. First time in a long time there was no wind. I got just over 11 for the first 1/4 of the trip. When all was said and done I got 10.5. Usually I'm fighting 30 mph winds and getting 8.5.

Living out here on the prairie, wind is the norm rather than the exception. I actually got to feel what no wind is like for about 60 miles on our way home Sunday for the first time. What a pleasure that was. Then about 9 AM it started to pick up again as we drove south toward North Platte, NE, and it was blowing hard by the time we got onto I-80. For a change, it was a slight tailwind (mostly blew from the side) from the southeast, so it didn't kill my mileage, but it was still necessary to keep a good grip on the wheel.

256 miles at 65 mph and got home with still 1/4 tank - worked out to almost 11 mpg, best I've gotten yet.

We had to have our TV repaired in Needles and couldn't get back on the road until 2:30pm. The temps were 105*+ and the winds were already blowing.

The mechanic told us we could bypass the grade on the I-40 W by heading north on US 95 and turning left on Goffs Rd (parallel to train tracks) and back on the I-40. That's what we did and once back on we felt the full force of the wind. There was a some drafting semi-trucks but even with that it was still an exciting drive.

Finally made it to Bakersfield @ 7:30pm. Normally it's an early start for us as mentioned before but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

I've wondered for years if there was such a thing as a "tail wind". Then I actually experienced one once. It was the most glorious 2 hours of my life!! And it wasn't even raining!!

The worst is when I'm headed south to the coast before a cold front (strong south wind) and headed back north home AFTER the front (strong north wind). It never fails!
