Those of you with truck canopies, toppers, etc...

I just priced two brands of canopy for my F150 from the two competitors here in the Seattle area. These are fiberglass, cab high and color match my TV.

I was quoted $1640.60 and $1630.46 for the two brands, both insulted with no bells or whistles to speak of. One without insulation was $1455.26. These prices are the canopy installed, tax license out the door. The truck has the 6.5 foot box.

Are these prices the same in the rest of the country? I have bought probably a half dozen canopies over the last 15 years and do not remember paying that much before.

If any of our Canadian neighbors have one, would it be worth a trip up to BC to purchase one from one of the factories where they are made?

Thanks in advance!

Murff, I had one on my GMC and boy that thing came in handy all the time. Bought it on Craig's list many years ago so don't remember how much I paid for it but it was money well spent.

Mine is a 5.5' fiberglass Leer shell with tool boxes on the sides where the windows would have gone. It is completely carpet lined on the inside of the shell and on the doors of the toolboxes. I paid $1400 for it eight years ago so the prices you were quoted seem quite reasonable to me.

Keep in mind, you have to consider the available payload on your particular TV. I have the same truck and needed to sell my A.R.E. cap (which I loved) to be able to stay within my payload limit. We're a family of five and very tongue-heavy but you may have a larger margin.

Those prices are in the ballpark. Our Tundra came with a color matched hard tonneau, which looked great, but after reinstalling the Bedslide, not enough height for cargo. We priced new Leer and A.R.E., but no one stocked 'em. Special order only, so we went with plan "B". Looked high and low for a used one, but only ones that came up were for the Crew Max. One day I searched Craiglist and found a gentleman in PA. with a cap, that wanted a hard cover! So off we went to swap. Now we have a truck making a "fashion statement". Red TV with a silver Leer cap. It don't look bad! Of course, you can always get one painted to match at a body shop.

I bought one of these about 10 years ago, with lining, a crank RV-type vent at the top, side slide windows, mesh on the door windows, and lighting inside, for about $2900. Oh, and it had a special reinforced frame for the heavy duty Ford rear suspensions, which added some additional aluminum framing. So, $1600 for a fiberglass one doesn't sound out of reason at all today. Commercial Aluminum Caps - UTPRO | SNUGTOP

Not too worried regarding payload. We have the smallest White Hawk made and GVW of 5900 lbs.

May just go with the uninsulated cap as the pickup bed is mostly for cargo.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Since my XTR has a few bells and whistles... my max payload is 1361 lbs. Once I added the weights of 5 passengers, carseats, WD hitch & cap, I was borderline.

Wow' Your XTR must have some bells & whistles. Granted, the SCrew is heavier than my SCab, but the SCab payload is 1789 and just a rear wheel drive.

My SCrew 4x4 is 1777 payload. I plan on adding a light roll-up tonneau cover - no topper.

ARE camper cover

Bought an ARE cab height fiberglass cover w/ sliding side windows, single handle rear window opener, full carpet lined (freebee), opening drop down front window (to access truck cab rear window & shell outside front window for cleaning), Yakima roof rack track w/ removable locking bars, painted to match truck - for 2011 F150 SCrew w/6.5' box. Bought in NC (ARE plant in OH) in June 2012 for $1,900. Included full bed HD rubber floor mat. Not sure of current cost. High quality cover. Wouldn't be without it. Checking dealer tomorrow on shell weight to do my TV GVWR weight calculations for towing setup. Only thing with cover is it's too tempting to carry extra stuff (tools, sporting equipment, extra clothing) around for convenience, but forgetting all the extra weight your burning extra gas to carry.) Looked at Leer & Leonard, but liked ARE much better... and cheaper.

I bought a leer canopy for my truck when new in 2014. Price sounds about right.

I paid right about $1500 for my ARE V series with twin t-handle locks, interior carpet (free with online coupon), and a Yakima rack tower system with 2 60" cross bars. I am going to price a new ARE MX mid-high one with the Yakima tracks tomorrow. Will let you know where I am at. Hope it's not too much more than the last one but I have a feeling the 8' length will add some cost.

Well, being a cheapskate, and SWMBO is also the finance minister, we found a decent deal. We are picking up the White Hawk tomorrow from the dealer and not far from them is a canopy dealer that quoted me $1465.00 for a color matched Century brand (made in USA) insulated canopy, tax, installed and out the door. I will order it and then wait the three weeks.

Sometimes ya gotta get away from the "big city"!

I bought this a year ago in Denver. It's not insulted and is pretty basic. Gave about $1200 but they were running a special. Mine is a long box so I don't know how much price difference that makes.

Canopy - good grief!

Put an A.R.E. fiberglass, cab-even, 8', insulated, 1 inside LED fixture, sliding windows, no front slider), color-coordinated, including 6 clamps for my '13 1500 Silverado for about $1150 installed. Will attempt to add photo. Regardless (and perhaps naively), I was even appalled at the apparently (then?) expensive price. 'Course my first aluminum, 8', uninsulated, slider windowed in 1983 in OKC was about $250! 'Member those days? HMM - guess I deleted the aforementioned canopy phto - oh well.

Here is another thought for you. I have a soft topper on my Tacoma. Bought it in August and it has been on ever since. It was on as Hurricane Matthew went right over the top of us while we were staying on the beach in North Carolina. After the rain let up I went and cke kec. All four cardboard boxes were dry as a bone. Not the most secure topper but cheaper and lighter than a hard cover.

Looks like I am right about $2300 out the door for a mid-rise ARE MX series or Leer 180. Both are quoted with roof tracks for my Yakima tower rack and have a tilt-in slider front window. Thats painted to match, installed and includes 8% sales tax.

Murff,

If you go with the Century, hope you have better luck than I have had with the one on our '13 Chevy. The fiberglass where the rear window fame is screwed into has broken out. I took it back tot he dealer, and they tried adding a screw on each side, but it broke out again. I just haven't had the chance to get back up there lately. Time to push for a warranty at the factory level. I know the hardware is only as year, but in my opinion since there isn't anything wrong with the door itself, it should be covered due to it being the shell itself.

With that said, the Century we had on our '10-1500 was awesome. Thought it fit like a glove, and looked great.

Good luck!!!

I've had several AREs, they are good, but have one problem. The back lift door goes too far above the top. So, if you forget to close it, and back out of the garage, the top of the garage door catches it, and its toast.

Part is my fault for having a low garage door opening. But, if you drive around any parking area, you will see toppers with broke doors.

I've talked to the ARE office and told them the problem. Its a simple fix for them to put a shorter gas charged opener on it to limit the height to just above the opening. But, they gave me a smart ass remark of "just close it, and you wont have that problem". And, its a $350 payday for them for the fix.

I drilled a hole on each end on the bracket that holds the opener, and ran a small cable with cable clamps to limit the opening.
