Trade in value help

Is there a formula to help figure trade in value? Trying to figure out how the dealer is getting their number. I used NADA and our numbers are totally different. I know they need to resell it but we are way off.

Are you looking at the NADA trade value or retail value?

The dealer uses a NADA Black Book which is totally different than the NADA info you find on line.

A good idea of value can be obtained by calling your bank. Ask what the loan value is. They won't loan more than it's worth.

Also keep in mind with NADA, only add OPTIONS. So unlike KBB, if your unit is standard with a furnace, then don't check the box.

Thanks for the help. I checked with another dealer and they were $3000 higher on the trade in value.

What I seen when I traded mine in last summer, you can pretty well take the nada low value with no option's added and that will get you in the ball park on trade.

NADA is only one source of data. I would consider all sources available to you. I would look at RV Trader and see what comparable units are going for. Not just in your area, but your region, or nation wide. Look at other online source like craigslist and see what is available for what price in your area. Look at the dealers lot (or competing dealers) and see what prices are like. This should give you an idea of what the dealer (or yourself) can ask for the trailer.

Of course the dealer want's to buy low and sell high, so that will be factored in. Seems like the trade in is not really valued based off what it's worth (this is a subjective value). The definition of value is different for the dealer, than it is for you. Or me. Or the bank... Market value, insurance value, cost, lending value, value in use. What's the value?

The more informed you get about what competing units are going for, the more comfortable you will be negotiating. If competing units are going for $8 - $10K, (value is almost always a range). In good condition you can support the higher range. The dealer can support the lower end of the range. If the dealer offers you $6K, then you know what's going on...

Typically the valuation of owners can be biased because it's ours, we can over value our own stuff. The valuation by dealers is less emotional and based off profit and maybe some risk.

I've sold 2 trailers. One I cut loose below market value because it was a RV rental company (and the rental commision I had been paid was about equal to the cost of the trailer) and I didn't want the hassle of dealing with the sale. The second trailer I sold private party at a price that was below retail, above trade in, and a good deal for buyer and myself.

BTY- I ended up buying about an hour outside OKC in Shawnee. They were very helpful and ordered exactly what I wanted. Good Luck!
Good Luck!

Given the actual selling price of a trailer varies dramatically from the MSRP there is a lot of room to monkey with trade in values. Also depending on your trade the market may differ from dealer to dealer in their ability to quickly turn it over.

As suggested the best number for retail value will come from a lender and you can expect less than that when trading because a dealer isn't going to give you what they can sell it for. Just like we try to negotiate for a 30% discount you can probably expect the same from a dealer buying your trade.

I've found in most situations it's better to private sale than trade.

About half of what you could sell it for if it's in good shape.... I literally doubled the offer the dealer gave me when I sold mine. It cost me $24- on RV Trader and I sold it in a week.

Trade in value help

We have been trying to trade in our 2013 Jayco 32BHDS for over a year now. It seems like the most anyone will give us for it is $11,000. Which is way under the NADA value, under the bank value and under what we owe. Even the place where we bought it doesn't seem to want to negotiate. We would like to upgrade to a 5th wheel, but I don't see how it is possible giving the figures we have gotten. Posted on Craig's list all across Texas and have had only 3-4 inquiries. Told the DW she was going to have to suffer with the TT for another couple of years.

I guess I lucked out. After owning it a year we traded TT into our dealer toward a FW. Only "lost" 5k on the trade. Considering we did a 45 day alaska trip and two other ten day trips, putting about 20,000 miles on that trailer, we made out just fine. Just lodging for all those nights would have cost more than 5k, not to mention ability to cook our own meals. Anyway, it's a shame your dealer won't work with you to get you into a FW.

Our dealer gave us payoff on our old Bullet this past December which was 6k over NADA low, in order to get us into our new Eagle HT 5th. We only got 25% off MSRP on the Eagle, but when you factor in the extra money on the trade we hit about 36% off so I feel like we did well.

This is a local dealer that we bought the Bullet from, plus we bought in late December which is apparently a really slow time for RV dealers, so they were very interested in making a deal.
