Trailer line dragged, nothing left....

My Dad took his x17z yesterday and was dragging the line connecting TT to tv. It's practically gone. I'm headin out to see them today and am picking up a replacement cable on the way out. What tools would I need?

The pigtail should terminate in a electrical box. If it does not, you may need to add one out of the weather and withing reach of what's left. Just re-terminate the ends and splice them together in the box.

i would solder the connections or splices, use silicone and heat shrink to permanently seal, then a large piece of heatshrink to go over the entire connection... but i like to overkill everything... more so, if it's gonna see the elements or water.

x2 - etrailer.com has a good video on how to replace the trailer/truck cable...

the wiring should be inside the electrical box and will be color-for-color with the seven wires.
These are connected with the large twist on nuts...

Some of the newer truck connectors doesnt hold the trailer connector all that good (On my 2010 F150 anyway) and I have to use a small stretch rope around the cable part of the connector and clipped back into the frame near the trailer connector to hold it in place.. My older truck really snapped in good and tight but the 2010 truck doesnt do that for me like my 2004 F150 truck did...

You might check that out for your dad and see what can be used to keep the connector from falling out... Not a good idea loosing your trailer electric brakes going down the road...

Oddly enough I've also done that. I just bought a new head and removed the old one with a knife and some pliers. Took about 30 minutes assuming you have enough cable left to replace the connector.

I went out yesterday and stopped at a dealer on the way out to pick up a brand new line. They had an 8' for about $36 and a 10' for about $53 so I ended up going with the 10'. I figured it was better to have too much cable because you could always hide the slack somewhere. Anyway, here's a shot. The only wire that didn't get cut was the yellow.

The line didn't terminate into a junction box. We had to get into the front seat of our dinette and then remove a piece of wood panel that protected the wires. The wires were just joined with wire nuts. I took a pic of the original wiring just in case something didn't come out right.

Before putting the dinette back we backed the truck up to test the lights. Wouldn't you know it, no lights! It took about 2 minutes before we realized the plug wasn't all the way into the truck. The lights came on as soon as we got the plug correctly seated so all is well. In the coming weeks we will probably look into splicing the old cable and keeping it the camper in case this happens again. We plan to strap the line to the frame now to remove most of the slack.
