Your welcome. Flexible planning is a must. No magic answer to were, but get out an old fashion atlas and highlight the must do sites. A pattern will start to form as you connect dots. Distances between N Parks etc are huge so don't turn your journey into a death march. As you plan, your PC will be your best friend. As you travel the farther you are from a major attraction the less you need to worry about reservations. You'll need them at places like Yellowstone, suggest Fishing Bridge CG inside the park. NP cgs typically don't have hookups. You can always overnite at Wally World or Sams.

On a more southernly route you have Zion and Brice and on around to the Rocky Mtn NP. Several other sites and Nat parks in Colorado, Utah, N Mexico.

Make a list [each do your own] and then put them together and look for overlaps. That's a good place to start.

Yep, when we had kids we figured all the tourists went home by the end of Aug. Then I found out that the fall is just as heavy. LOTS of people without kids like to travel those months before the snow starts.

I would not miss Yellowstone if you are going to be anywhere near it. If you go southern vs northern then Death Valley (yes, it is very pretty) also goes on the list. Great Salt Lake. I still have not seen everything I want to in the west and I've lived there (NM and AZ) for 50 years.
