Trip to Corpus Christie

Hello everyone...we are planning our 1st trip of 2013 to Corpus Christie Texas in a few weeks. We will be leaving all the snow here at home in Ontario and heading to warmer weather. I guess I'm wondering if anybody has any advice or tips for us as this is only the second trip with our new Melbourne. It's winterized right now so I won't be able to unwinterize( if that is really a word) it until we get to warmer weather.
If anyone has any tips or campgrounds near or around Corpus Christie Texas we shouldn't miss please let us know..

We spent a month last winter and 5 months in the Corpus area last year. We stayed in Rockport about 30 miles from Corpus at Palm Harbor RV park--very nice small park on the Intercoastal Canal. There are lots of parks in the area--if you like
State Parks there is Mustang Island State Park on Mustang Island--water and electric and a sewer dump and also some county parks on the beach on Mustang
Island. Port Aransas also has lots of parks and open camping--no hookups on the beach. You can check out many of the parks on www.campgroundreviews.com .
Fun area--many winter Texans and lots of grear restaurants

Just inside the National Seashore entrance is Bird Island Bay. It's boondocking, but you are right next to the water and the very, very inexpensive. $10 for 8 weeks camping in the year, 2 weeks at a time with gaps inbetween. You are allowed to use the park dump station and fresh water fills for free when camping there.

Lot's of windsurfers use the area. One of the top spots for windsurfing in the nation. I think you can rent boards there and get lessons, if interested.

If you fish, check out Goose Island state park, across the bridge from Rockport. There's long fishing pier, and you dont' need a license. It's included when camping at TX state parks for free. They will even loan you a fishing rod and tackle for free! at the guard shack! My cousin and I each caught a 30+ pound black drum at the end of the pier one evening. What a blast that was!

We stayed at "On The Beach" in Port Aransas and we enjoyed it completely but were there only a few days. In Corpus we stayed at "Padre Palms". It was not as nice but still comfortable (and a little less $$).

Go to the Aransas wildlife refuge. It's a major wintering area for whooping cranes. In fact, there are usually a few near Goose Island. Just keep driving past the park entrance until you have to turn left at the water. They are usually around there eating crabs and mussels.

The Padre Island National Seashore is a great place to visit.

The aquarium and Lexington aircraft carrier in Corpus Christi are great to see.

Make sure you go to an HEB grocery store while you are there.

the staff is nice and they stay on top of things.
The ranger came by several times at night to look for what ever park rangers look for. Keep the rif raf in check. ????
There are sewer hook ups but only a few. Most sites are just power and water.
The trash got picked up and the beach was clean.

De-winterize is the usual term used... if you have a memory foam topper or mattress it will need a few days to "thaw out" Mine was like a cold hard rock so I ended up sleeping on the couch.

We stay here a couple of times a year, usually early summer (June) and fall (Oct.). I like to kayak fish and that is a good time. We met some people last Oct. from Ontario, Canada scoping it out for overwintering and they loved it - were coming back Jan. 1. The people that run the place said it gets pretty full in the winter so check first. In the summer when school's out, it is crowded and sort of a zoo.
