TT or 5er, New or Used, Bunks or no Bunks?

Hello all--

Just joined your great owners forum! I am not a Jayco owner, yet!

In the market for a TT or 5er. We are leaning towards a 5er as we previously owned one and like the way they tow.

We've owned a TT, 5er, and Class A. We are now moving back to a towable after about 5 years of not camping/RVing.

Recently purchased the truck in my sig. It has 60K original miles and is in great shape. I fully maintain her and she gets what she needs!

So, we are looking at both new and used. I will stick with the HT line if we go 5er.

Stuck on... TT or 5er, New or Used, Bunks or Rear LR.

We believe we want a bunk house or dedicated area for kids. This allows them their own space and keeps there things organized. However, we really like the room of a rear living room.

Uses: Typically 2-5 days, Northern/Central CA coast, beaches rivers, lakes, and inland areas, Lake Havasu, Grand Canyon, Tahoe, Northern Sierras, and maybe one long trip to Disney World (This would be a three week trip) next summer! Maybe even a trip up to Martha's Vineyard!

Thoughts, insight, been there, done that, recommendations?

Below are two units we recently looked at:

Used:http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/rvd/4727883454.html

New: http://www.richardsonsrv.com/Search-...T-295BHDS.aspx

Your input is appreciated!

The Ht bunk house will be closer to the weight of a "light" FW. The Eagle Super Lite is somewhat heavier. We have a 2012 HT 26.5 RLS and like it a lot. It's a rear living FW, not a bunk house. The price looks pretty good as well, for a new FW. Your truck will probably have no problem pulling and handling either one of them.

If you're a fisherman, will you be taking a boat along. If you go with the 5er have you seen this? http://www.loadit.com/front-boat-loader.html

How many kids? How old? Will they be with you 2 years from now, 5 years from now?

Your truck should pull most anything you are looking at.

Its all about the floor plan. Given the number and different types you have had, you are surely aware of the pluses and minuses of them.

Good luck in your search

Welcome to the JOF!

Welcome! We love the large rear living space we have, especially on a rainy day. It works well for us as we don't have kids. If we did, the only place for them to sleep would be the couch

Well if money is an issue the used one in the links is about half what the new one is. As for having a bunk house or not that`s really a personal choice. I know folks with kids that chose not to have the bunks so they could have the additional living space, did not mind turning the dinette and couch into beds everynight. Most though do prefer a dedicated sleeping area for the kids. As for me, as our kids get older I would lean towards more living space in our next trailer and no bunks so we would have more room on bad weather days and when the kids stop camping the DW and I could have that space as well.

Fiver vs TT, there have been many discussions on the pros and cons here for each, once again it is about choices and compromises. Link:

I'm not going to be much help on deciding as I am kind of in the same situation myself lol. I keep looking at teh 27RLS and the 26BHS. We only have one daughter and both my wife and I are starting to lean towards more living space in the camper vs a dedicated bunk. As we camp for longer time periods and more often we have started to wish that the current bunks were a nicer sitting area.

your situation sounds similar to mine and the wife, we have 1 6 y/o and the bunk house in the back of our 2014 HT 27.5BHS is great for him and his friends, we put a TV in there for when its not so nice out and when it gets cold or raining and the kids are in bed we just close the door and sit in the living area without waking them up, we have friends that sleep on the pull out couch and they find it really comfortable and my buddy is not a small person

and for this summer i towed it with a F150 so your truck will be awesome

I think the bunk house is essential when kids are going camping. Additionally, I don't know how sever your son's autism is -- but I imagine providing him some dedicated comfortable space would be very beneficial over the long term.

Cant help much with the decisions, its basically boils down to what fits the user in the end. However, we do have the 29.5bhds like you looked at and love it! Probably camped in it close to 45 days now and still love it.

Love Bunkhouse

We have a 5 yr old and 7 yr old. With our bunkhouse they have there own space and own bed. We don't have put up and take down their beds everyday. It also great for hauling all the junk they collect in the bunks.

You might want to compare the Eagle 31.5 FBHS 4 bunks and Eagle 27.5 BHS 2 bunks. I have the 27.5, great for two kids (beds over 6 1/2 ft.), bunk house has door and TV (really camping with Dish Tailgater}. The only thing I'd change is the table for a dinette.

tough decision as the three bunk models are all soo nice!

The 27.5 and 29.5 do not have TVs in master bedroom. 29.5 has no TV in bunk room.

The 31.5 has TV in master and bunk rooms, and has separate toilet, but bunks appear rather narrow at 30" wide. That is like a coffin!

I like the idea of a separate bunk room with door, but would like wider than 30" bunks and a TV in bunk room. TV in master is also a PLUS.

Now which model has all of this and is at 10,000# GVWR or less?

Well, its come down to.....

2008 Jayco Eagle Superlite 31BHDS
OR
2014 Jayco 29.5 Eagle HT BHDS.

Prices:

2008: Dealer will go $16K plus tax and license
2014: Dealer will go $30K plus tax and license

Basically the used is 1/2 price of the new!

Any guidance between these two units? Pros and Cons between them?
I am having difficulty deciding between the two.

That '08 looks very clean...to save $14k it would be my choice.

I would want to ensure the roof is still in good shape, an '08 has seen 7 years of sun already, but if it was properly cared for there is still lots of life left.

I don't like the JayCube for the bottom bunk, but that it just me. For $14k, if I needed to I could come up with an alternative.

Full disclosure, I don't finance, so the price is really driving my response.

If you have kids you can't beat the bunks. Having to set up beds on a fold down table or couch every night and put it away every morning gets old real fast.

Not to mention if the parents get a proper bed it's only fair the kids do too.

Yes, the wife has determined that bunks are in order for the reasons shared here. you are correct....Setting up/breaking everyday will get old quick.

The J-cube is OK, but the bunks on the 29.5 are nice and wide! Although there is no door in either unit. the 29.5 does have a TV bracket on the forward wall. The steps next to the bunks make getting into either bottom or top bunk quite easy.
Wish it would have come with an 8cu ft refer and an extra AC unit in bedroom. It gets hot here in SoCal and the Southwest!

To get an 8cu ft refer and 2nd AC, I would have to order new. This will cost me an extra $4K

Now, just trying to determine new or used!!!

I had a tough decision as you are,I wanted a 5er but couldn't find one in my price range,So I went with the 2015 Eagle Premier 314BHDS,my 2 kids love it,one a teen and the other 4 yrs old. They have plenty of room to chill out and hang with friends and be out of my wife and I's way,I like the J cube personally, you can fold it up when not in use and not take the sheets off,or just open 1 for them to hang out on and watch t.v
