My opinion on these 3rd party warrantees:
They make a whole lot of money for the issuing company. Total up the premium for 3-7 years (depends on what is covered) and you will find the total cost of a new unit. They are betting that you will take reasonable care of your property and it will last for its rated service life.
Remember: The House Always Comes Out Ahead.
IF you can afford the premiums for this coverage, set the money aside in a separate savings account. In a year, you can buy a new water heater for the house. In 3 a new fridge. But these things last MUCH longer, don't they?
The manufacturers warrantee cover's defects from the factory. It a thing holds up well during that time, or only needs minor fixes, you've got yourself a winner that will give good service with only reasonable maintenance and repairs.
Once you are beyond the rated life and/or the thing has become a money pit, replace it.
