Using glazed tiles in oven

I have been unable to find unglazed tiles locally. We have left over 12" tiles from our home and thought we could use these. Any reason not to? We will not be cooking right on them. Just using for heat dispersion

Over the years we have tried many different things to disperse heat in our rv ovens. We tried the tiles and pizza stones, all of which eventually cracked. For the past 5 years we have settled on a Lodge cast iron 10.5' griddle. We simply hack sawed the handle off and put in on the bottom oven shelf inverted right over the burner. Has worked wonderfully.

I use a round pizza stone to help with heat regulation, but glazed tiles would work. You could wrap them in aluminum foil to prevent the shards from scattering if they shatter. I think the best thing would be a sheet of 1/4" cold rolled steel plate, cut to fit under the oven rack.

DW uses insulated cookie sheet she found in a cooking specialty store that fit the RV oven.

DW uses what looks like a heavy duty cookie sheet that fits our RV oven. Actually, we don't know what it was used for in its original life. She found it in a thrift shop.

You could use a baking steel instead of a tile or stone. Similar to using a steel griddle with the handles cut off but made for the specific purpose of evening out the ovens heat.

I've tried 12x12 2 times and both cracked , 1 was glazed the other unglazed, so i decided to go with 4 small 6 x 6 unglazed stone and since then all is fine

I am using 4 6 X 6 terracotta colored un-glazed tiles I got at Home Depot. Previously I used a 12 X 12 floor tile but it cracked. They make a huge difference when baking anything in the tiny oven.

We have a standard 12x12 (maybe 14x14?) glazed floor tile in our oven. Only used it once so far, and no cracks. Marginal results, but still better than nothing.

I really like the idea of the baking steel though. Or an old piece of cast iron if you can find it...

I'm new to TTs and haven't tried to use the oven. What is the issue that requires an added heat absorber?

The oven in your camper is small and things are closer to the burner which is right down the middle. Things have a tendency to burn, so If you put something to disperse the heat it helps some what.

RV ovens tend to burn things on the bottom.

We're going to be using our oven for the first time this summer, and we found the price of a pizza stone to be more expensive than we can justify for the two or three times a year we'll use the oven. But we do have a small 6" cast iron skillet that we probably won't use for anything. So we'll try throwing that in the oven before making the cinnamon buns.

Update:
Our glazed floor tile broke this weekend. In dramatic fashion apparently. I was outside grilling burgers when DW slung open the door and shouted to me that the "stupid tile" in the oven "blew up" and "nearly killed her".

Turns out it cracked and made a loud noise that scared her. She was cooking some curly fries. The tile will likely still work as it is intended though, even with the break. Meanwhile, I'll be looking for a piece of cast iron...

I have been using a round pizza stone but have a question about location. Should it be directly on the metal shelf that holds the burner or a rack between the burner shelf and my biscuit pan? I have been putting it on top of the burner. Thanks

I was told long ago to use unglazed tiles for a couple of reasons. First was that some glazes can break down with repeated heating/cooling cycles and give off fumes that may be hazardous.

Secondly, the glazing firing can create stress in the tile making them more likely to spontaneously break or even shatter when they undergo the thermal cycling an oven creates. Most glazed tile is meant to look attractive and be walked on at "room temperatures".

And to answer one poster's question I put my four, 6" X 6" tiles on the porcelinized steel bottom shelf which is directly over the burner. I push them to the middle ensuring I don't cover the holes around the perimeter of the oven bottom.

It has worked great for years. Same tiles, three different motorhomes. Just take them out before hitting the road or it may likely damage the oven or the tiles!
