Veterans Day

Without getting into a contest regarding this topic.

Today is Veteran’s Day. I was invited to a ceremony, not because I’m a great guy, but solely because I’ve spent time in the military service. Although embarrassing to me, I will go because my granddaughter requested I be there.

The invitation got me to thinking. What is Veterans Day? If my memory services me correct, it initially was “Armistice day” to celebrate the end of WWI. In 1954, it was changed to “Veteran’s day.” This was times when the military was made up of soldiers primarily there against their will. (Drafted) Are there any veterans today? What is a Veteran? Anyone in the military today is there by choice. If they don’t like it, they can quit. To me, a veteran is that individual that was drafted against his/her will, yet served his/her country. That person put his life on hold, and on the line, to defend you and me and our freedoms. Many times that person gave the ultimate sacrifice for the cause.

I spent 27 years in the military retiring in 1998. I did that time solely by accident. I never intended to serve that long. I’m very proud of that fact that I did. I’m thankful for those individuals that choose that profession. That profession is available to all. Am I a veteran? No. I chose that life. I could have quit any day. The only thing I’m owed for that service is what “Uncle Sam” promised me at age 18. (Promises that are somewhat in jeopardy today) My community owes me nothing. No recognition, etc.

To honor those that fought and died for our freedoms, we need to keep a close watch on our Politians to insure we are not loosing our freedoms, “one freedom at a time” in the name of “do gooder laws”, or “National Security”.

If you want to do something to honor our men/women in uniform, I’m sure, in your community, there is an Army Reservist or National Guard solider deployed serving our country as we speak? His/Her family is trying to survive on considerable less income. Honor him/her by mowing the grass, repair that broken window, replace that washing machine, fix that leak, pay the electric bill, change the oil in the car, etc. These are all things his/her family has to contend with during his/her deployment without the funds to do so.

Just the thought of a Army Retired Non-Vet.

I am proud to be a veteran. I was not drafted but likely would have been because I got my pre induction letter in 1960 and had my physical and such for the Army. Soon as I got off the bus home, I joined the Air Force.

I got an education and more during my time in. I am proud to fly the flag on Veterans day in honor of the men and women who served, both freely on a volunteer basis or otherwise.

They all contribute to making this a country that people are attracted to and want to belong to.

Pity the person who lives here and does not feel patriotic on National Holidays or any other day for that matter.

Thanks to All for your service.

Sadly the demonstrations going on across the country today after the election saddens me, especially on such a special day.....
