Warranty Caution

Friday I dropped my Eagle at a CW that is the only shop in town that will service RVs not purchased from them. I called this summer and was directed to a specific person who handled that type of service. He was very helpful and merely asked I call back in October to schedule for November. That was just fine with me and the appointment went off without a hitch.

Jayco approved the three fixes and the work on the two items of concern have been taken care of. We are waiting for Jayco to send out a new light fixture, which I really didn't expect them to agree to replace.

But he gave me some info that might save others from a problem with an otherwise legitimate warranty claim. That is, I told him I had saved up my problems as none were serious, but had been apparent very early in the 2-year warranty period. He said some mfrs. will deny coverage and claim the problem is due to negligence simply because they are old. I will take him at his word that some problems can be "aged" and so maybe it would be advisable to at least call and/or email the mfr. and report the problem, asking if you can wait and see if other problems will arise before taking it in.

Of course, if we lived anywhere near our dealer or if the problem had been major, that would have been a different situation.

Good advice Cekkk! My dealer told me the same thing. Because we lived about four hours from our dealer, the service manager suggested that when I had a warranty issue to add to my list, to call him so he could put it in the computer. Even though we may take the tt in three months later, it will already be in the system. Never had a problem having any of our warranty issues dealt with satisfactorily months later

Healthi, your calling the dealer is better than my suggestion of calling the mfr. Glad to know dealers will do that. My dealer is very good and I'm sure they'd make that record.

Here is what is in the Warranty and Service section of the Jayco Owner's manual with respect to notifying the dealer of defects during the warranty period.

"2. Provide notification mentioned in (1) above, within 10 days of when the owner discovered or should have discovered, the substantial defect in material or workmanship attributed to jayco".

There is no definition of "substantial defect" , so buyer beware.

Kiwaon. I wasn't aware of that requirement, but it sure makes sense. And I can't imagine me, at least, letting something major go for long. Mine were minor but they won't go unreported in the future. I'll still have a couple weeks of warranty left when we return from snowbirding and I really hope I won't have any last minute problems. But better before expiration than after!
