Weigh station curiosity

I know in most states RV's and TT's are exempt from pulling into the weigh stations. Had a first last weekend that sparked my curiosity. While traveling south on I35 from KS to OK, we approached the weigh station just south of the KS, OK border. This is a modern weigh station complete with license plate and occupant cameras, transponders and a highway scale that measures you weight at highway speeds prior to the weigh station. As we approached with our TT in tow, a sign lit up stating truck must enter weigh station. The DW thought the sign was continuously lit but I thought it came on as we approached. Seeing it at the last minute, not really paying attention and knowing that it supposedly did not include us, we blew on by it. BTW, there were trucks in the weigh station and no trucks close to us on the highway. Our gross combined weight that day was 14,200 lbs as scaled prior to our hitting the road. So far, we haven't received a nasty gram from OK nor were we chased down as we continued our journey. So the question remains, should we have stopped, are we exempt? We are new to this so our curiosity has us guessing? BTW, couldn't find a number to the weigh station to inquire.

My guess would be that the trailer height triggered the truck alert message. I don't think any states require (or want) an RV to stop at weigh stations. They're just interested in commercial vehicles. This is just an opinion not a certainty.

You're exempt. That 400,000 dollar scale and equipment thought you were an 18 wheeler. It's their problem, not yours

I've QA'ed some of those systems here in Colorado, and they don't get it right all the time.

If you do stop, they will just wave you through. Like Bansai said they are only interested in commercial vehicles.
