What would you have done?

Last June while traveling from Las Cruces NM to home, we had an interesting event happen.

Reading a recent thread regarding "one night stands" reminded me of this. We were traveling, doing about 400 miles per day with a planned route and reservations made a week in advance for each night of the trip home. None of the RV parks (all private) required a credit card number, except one.

When we arrived at "that" park, we stopped at the office and it was closed with a hand written note on the door that stated, "closed, please pay in the morning". Okay, great! We have a reservation but which campsite is suppose to be ours?

Asked a few folks by the office what to do and just received a shrug & "I dunno?" So, we drove around and docked in the first site we saw empty. Now, I must state, this park was nice looking when we entered but after seeing some of the rigs that were there "fulltime" and probably hadn't left the park since the Johnson (Andrew) Administration, we were a little nervous wondering if the tow vehicle would be sitting on blocks in the morning.

Anyway, to the point; in the morning, we got hitched up and stopped by the office to toss the trash (out of the trailer) and pay the parking ransom. I walked up to the office and there is a new note stating, "will return at 1:15 PM". Well, as we were planning on being a couple hundred miles north of there by 1:15 PM, we departed.

This is where I ask you, what would you have done? Pay the rent via credit card by calling them. Or, if they billed your credit card without ever seeing you, would you complain? They never saw you. Also, they failed to live up to their end of the transaction by not notifying me of where my reserved space was located.

Opinions?

Leave a note on the door. "Thank you for the one night stand".

I'd call and arrange payment.

IMO the right thing to do would have been to give them a call and paid by CC. Regardless of whether they were there or not, you were able to park for the night. So it's only fair that you pay for it.

Integrity / Ethics is doing the right thing even when nobody is looking. Even though it was poor business practice on the part of park management, I'd call and pay.

We had a similar situation once. We called later in the day and they asked us to send a check when we returned from our trip.

So long as you contact them they'll work payment out with you.

I would call and explain the situation.

I have camped in sp's and seen people come in after hours, set up and be gone before the campground came alive in the morning. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth because it is the same as stealing. Someone has to clean the cg and the honest people end up paying for it in the end.

I have checked into many closed offices that had an envelope system on the honor system. It never occurred to me to skip out without paying.

Same here. Worst case, we've written a check and put that in the envelope when we didn't have the correct amount in cash. Seems that was OK because those checks were always cashed.

The same type thing happened to us on vacation for 2 weeks in St. Croix several years ago.
Rented a house and realtor says I'll catch up with you guys later. All she had as far as info. Was our name.
The day before we were leaving to go home we had to go find her to pay.........

One of the provincial park campgrounds around here has no office, just a drop box. You're supposed to fill out the form and put it in the envelope with your payment. The conservation officer comes by once a day to check on things, clean the facilities and empty the garbage, and compare the contents of the drop box with the occupied sites. If you're there and haven't paid, well, he's got the law on his side.

I hope these kind of folks don't stop off at those roadside markets on a country road that have produce out for sale and a simple cigar box to place the money in.
Sheesh. That some people have to even ask what they should do is a sad commentary on society.

I guess the question that needs an answer is:
"What DID they do?"
