Leaving Home here in East Texas to Broken Bow Oklahoma [ two and half hour trip}.. Gonna fish, drink wild turkey and swim nekkid all at the same time...
In August we are headed to pensacola beach for seven days and nights.. Once there I plan on fishing, drinking wild turkey and swimming nekkid but not all at the same time as there are sharks....

I'm already on my summer trip: Returning to Michigan from my new winter home in Texas. I'm on what I refer to as my "Old West" tour. It's taken me a month already, but hey, I'm retired! What's the rush?

I started in Ingram, TX; drove up to Dallas to spend a few days visiting my sister and her family. From there, I drove to Lake Thunderbird State Park, near Norman Oklahoma. I was told it use to be an old Native American hunting ground. Big park, but only a small (50 site) area with elect & water hookups suitable for larger rigs. Nice large sites with plenty of shade and a nice boat ramp. Enjoyed my stay over Thanksgiving last November, so spent 5 days there this trip. From there, I drove to Cheney State Park in KS. Not the best place I've stayed, but certainly not the worst . . . especially for just one night. From there, I drove to Rock Creek Station State Historical Park near Fairbury, NE. Rock Creek Station was an old Pony Express and stagecoach stop on the Oregon Trail. It's the site where "Wild Bill" Hickok became famous after a shoot-out that left three men dead. They have restored a few of the buildings and have a nice interpretive center there. The electric only sites are large with plenty of shade, and they have a dump/water station by the restrooms/showers. Had a chance to visit some nearby relatives during my 10-day stay there.

From Fairbury, I made the drive to North Platte, NE where I spent four days at the campground at "Buffalo Bill" Cody's Scouts Rest State Historical Park - his home while he was putting on his "Wild West" shows. The self guided walking tour of his restored home, barn, and grounds takes only a couple of hours, and contains many family mementoes, furniture, and "Wild West" show posters. Leaving there, I drove to Merritt Reservoir State Rec. Area near Valentine, NE - not far from the home of Willa Cather, author of "Oh Pioneer". It was made into a movie that starred Debra Winger back in the '80s. Now, I'm at the foot of the Black Hills, at a nice private campground outside of Rapid City, SD. It's called Happy Holidays Resort. The spaces are "compact", but it's clean and the people are friendly. And, it's half the price of the KOA & other Good Sam parks in the area. I've visited Mt. Rushmore & Crazy Horse monuments, and Custer State Park (where they have the largest herd of free-ranging Bison outside of Yellowstone). Plan to visit Deadwood - where "Wild Bill" Hickok was shot during a poker game - later today. Ready to head back to Michigan on Thursday, but don't yet have any plans for overnight stays. Will just have to see what the road brings.

Next summer will be my trip to Yosemite and Yellowstone, on my way to a family reunion in California. Just hope my health and wallet hold out long enough to make it that far.

There's just so much to see in this great country. Take some time and enjoy it!

Do you recommend a place in Door County? We have been there many times, but have only rented a condo. Now that we have a new TT, we are wondering where some good spots would be to camp in Door Country. Thanks!

We stayed at the Custer KOA - reasonably priced and full hookups. (We've stayed at the Hill City KOA, too, but it is HUGE - 1500 sites!!! Custer is smaller and more quiet.)

Go see Custer SP. Drive Iron Mountain Rd and Needles Highway (can't take your trailer there - you'll see why). See Mt Rushmore (hike the President's Trail) in the daytime - then go back for the evening show when they entertain, then light up the mountain. Also visit the Crazy Horse sculpture project.

At Keystone - or Hill City - you can ride a steam train through the mountains from one end to the other, then back (either way). Lots of shops and restaurants, and a museum or two in either town.

If you have kids, you'll want to go to Bear Country - a drive-thru wildlife park. Well worth the money!

And Wind Cave is in the area too - a national park. We took the cave tour. Very interesting and different from the other caves we've been in.

If you have time, Badlands NP is just east on I-90 - about 85 miles. We stayed at the White River KOA. Badlands is worth driving through and hiking around some - a day, anyway. And as you leave, drive north to Wall, SD - for your free glass of ice water! LOL! That's been their hook since the 1800s. Even though it's a tourist trap, it's well worth a visit, just for some great burgers and ice cream. (And you'll buy T-shirts, I'm sure!)

You asked for ideas. here's a few, all less than 100 miles apart.

Custer State Park has electric hookups, but not full hookups. We are staying in the Game Lodge campground the 2nd week of June. Looking forward to a great time!

Mine will be a trip to Virginia Beach for a week without DW and DS#2 who have other commitments. So it'll be just me, DS#1 (11) and the dog ... and two of my nieces (11 and 8) who have been itching to go with us for a while now. The trip will be interesting regardless of how it turns out, but I'm hoping it'll be for really fun reasons.

Hope you all have very effective security and strong locks on your doors and windows when you provide the exact destination of planned travel along with the exact dates you will be gone. Your home contains valuable possessions. Just sayin'.

My 2 step sons, 20 & 22 live in the house, so no issue of empty house here! but that is a good point you bring up.
