Which tote to buy?

So after using my trailer a few times now, I'm convinced I need to buy a waste water tote. Not only to use at the campground but since I have a septic system at home, I'll be able to dump there and avoid the long lines when we leave the campsite. My question is which one do you guys think is the best? And, are they able to hold black water as well as gray? Also, I'll have to pull it a short distance through a field when I get home so it needs to have decent wheels. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

I have the 27 gallon Thetford smart tote. It has 4 wheels and all hoses, connections are self-contained in the tote for convenience. It also has a handle so that you can hook it up to your hitch and tow it to the dump station. I use my tote for grey water only, although it will hold black water waste as well.

Since I don't own a truck, I transport it in my X23B when not in use.

It's amazing how quick the grey water tank fills up and this comes in handy, especially on those long week-end camping trips.

We have a 30 gallon Barker with two wheels and it is a real pain to deal with because it's so heavy when full. Pay the extra $$ and get a tank with four wheels. Yes, you can use it for emptying black water as well. Just wash it out extra well after use.

Yeah, I'm finding out how quickly they fill up! We are on our 4th day of camping with several kids AND THEY WASTE WATER! Lol. I think a few of those water containers to fill the fresh tank back up and a portable tote will make it a little easier. No point in having to worry about water usage when I'm not boondocking and it's available right across the camp.

I have an 18 gal thetford and love it. I attach to my trailer hitch and drive very slowly to the campground dump station. The only issue I have us that thre is a small amount of water remaining in the tank every time. I only use it for gey water

Black water / gray water it is what the totes are made for.. I have 2 right now a 4 wheeler with a side discharge that is great and a 2 wheeler that I have to lift on end to dump... AVOID the ones that you have to lift to dump... your back will thank you..

Seann45,
Do you recall what brand your four wheeler is? It seems that Thetford is winning so far!

Barker also makes the 4 wheel models. I have had a Barker 22 gallon two wheel for 5 years now, no issues. Tow it with the hitch adapter.

I have the Barker 32gal. right after I got it they came out with a new type of wheels, that lets you pull it faster. I called them about the new type of wheels and ask if I could buy them, the man I talked to said he would send me the kit for free, the kit had 4 wheels and 2 axles, they even paid the shipping.

I've had it now for about three years, I pull it about 25mph to 30mph and it is in just as good as it was the day that I bought it, we use it a lot and I mean a lot, it gets a work out every time we go camping, and we camp one to two full weeks every month.

This is a picture of the tote with the old type wheels.

I have been very happy with my Barker 2 Wheel 22 gal tote. It has served us very well. That said I bought mine used from CL for $50, if I was buying new and paying full fair I would have a 4 wheel 25 gallon version. Also if it didn't have pneumatic tires already I would upgrade them with a set from harbor freight.

When mine gives out, I'll replace it with a 4 wheel -- unless of course I find another deal on CL.

The tires on the ones I'm looking at online don't seem to be pneumatic. Is that an option?

I wasn't aware that any of them came with pneumatic tires as OEM equipment, but one post mentioned a new tire. Anyway, several folks have simply upgraded using harbor freight wheels/tires.

Ok, I misunderstood you... Hitch Pin says he can go 25-30 mph. That's much faster than I would have thought you could go with one of these tanks attached to your truck!

The new wheels are steel and have ball bearings.

Here is a picture of one with the new wheels.

Call Barker at 1-800-537-9940 and ask them about the new wheels, that's what I did.

The new wheels that they sent me was not pneumatic, they was called No-Flat, they were wider than the ones that came on the tote, plus the wheels were steel and have ball bearings.

Here is one place that has them.

Here is just the wheel kit.

Thanks Hitch Pin,
The description in the link you sent me says that they are in fact pneumatic tires. I'll have to do a little more research and compare it against the Thetford Smart Tote before I make a decision.

That's what I did, I compared the Barker to the Thetford Smart Tote before I made a decision to get the Barker. I have a buddy that has a Thetford Smart Tote and after going with him to dump it, I'm glad I got the Barker, the new wheels are a very "Big Plus"
