Why don't motorhomes and TV's and TT's have to go through weigh stations?

I've always wondered why this is. Is it the chassis, weight, axle, etc...?

They are non-commercial vehicles.

Sounds simple. So, if my hubby used his commercial Ford F550 to pull our TT, then we would have to go through the weigh station?

If he has to stop at the weigh stations without the TT then yes.

I have in the past tried to be weighed at some state operated scales- If the scale is empty, some operators have weighed us but we have also been rebuked for disobeying the posted signs- Haven't been ticketed but won't do it again- JMHO- DD

My dad check at a commercial truck check once. They suspected his truck camper and large utility trailer were overweight so they had him drive about 45 min out of his wway to weight the camper and trailer and he was overweight so he had to off load some of his cargo to continue on. He was 6 hours from home but fortunately knew some body nearby to come get his stuff. So you can get called in to weigh

I have been weighed before not with my camper but an enclosed work trailer. He weighed me on the spot and I was 1000lbs. over my tag weight. He just wrote me a ticket.

Here in Virginia, I've never had any problems with weighing at the State Police scales on the interstate. The only thing they have asked is, not being an obvious commercial vehicle, for me to pull around to the parking lot and walk into the office to tell them what I need. When informed of my need for weights, they said just pull around to the scales, and then they gave me front TV axle, TV rear axle, 5er only, and total weights, all over the speaker, and no charge. Can't get better than that. Took only about 9 minutes tops.
