1st time camper OR Jayco owner (154BH)

Hi everyone!
I know almost nothing about pulling a camper trailer. While I pulled lots of things when I was in the Army, I've never owned my own.

Bought with the primary reason being that I wanted to be a "snow bum" with my 7 year old daughter in Lake Tahoe. Wife wouldn't let me camp in the back of our Odyssey with her so I threw out the idea of buying a small-ish camper. This made it a little more legit as far as my wife was concerned but she still wasn't convinced until she learned there was an actual heater built in AND a friend of ours said they used to take theirs for skiing ALL THE TIME.

I have lots of questions BUT before asking I'm planning on soaking up the wealth of information on this website already posted here first.

There's just one burning thing I'd like to know so I can put it to rest in my wife's head... She's under the impression that pretty much ANY time we want to go somewhere in this thing we're going to HAVE to rent a space at an RV park with hookups. I know that you can "dry camp" but she's thinking there's NO WHERE you can park it to sleep in. I already explained truck stops, camping worlds, walmarts (some), etc. but she said if we want to plan a "proper trip" and save on a hotel cost somewhere, we'd have to have an RV space. ---Can I realistically expect to be able to plan a trip to say, legoland in San Diego and stay in this instead of a hotel? Where would you park it? (Assuming you didn't want to do a proper RV park hookup?)

Thanks! See you in the forums!

Congratulations on the trailer and welcome to the JOF.

This is probably not much help, but.....
IMO, if you want to stay near a 'tourist destination' like Legoland, generally you'll have to plan to stay in an RV park. Except for truck stops, most free places have gotten overloaded and RVers are no longer allowed to spend the night.

In most cases, too, you would not be allowed to drop your trailer there. Even truck stops where you can spend the night, you wouldn't be able to leave your trailer there while you went into a park etc.

There are discount groups you can join (Passport America is one) and you can buy a membership (Thousand Trails is one) to find lower rates in RV parks.

A lot of states and counties have camp grounds. They are usually a lot cheaper than the private CG's, and some states (like FL) give residents 1/2 off the going price. Most of the ones we stayed at have electric and water but no sewer connections. For overnight stays, there is always Walmart and the gas stations, but at most you are not allowed to disconnect the TV from the TT. All need permission to stay overnight.

If you are trying to show how much you saved by buying a TT vs hotel/motels, do not even try to defend that reasoning, unless you are out camping a whole lot.
