First time TT owners and excited to join you all!

Hi there fellow Jayco owners!

I'm James and my wife is Crystal and we are thrilled to announce we are picking up our brand new 267 BHWS on Monday! First time TT'ers so we are looking for any and all help you can offer.

We are already pouring over the extensive information on this great forum. As we are new to this prestigious clan...and the TT world...what are your top lessons you wish you knew when you first started out?

Also, if anyone has ideas for great places to look at setting up over the winter months we would be especially interested in those recommendations. We are new and looking for any help you can offer.

Thanks in advance!

Top lessons we wish we knew.. HMMM.... Having been avid campers for many years we already had the basic camping part down. (supplies, food stock, cooking, etc.)

We started out with a used popup with very basic features so it was a quick and easy step up for us on that part.

When we decided to get serious about looking for a full fledged TT I found this forum. This was even before I decided to go with Jayco. The forum was just so full of help on many different levels and the members seemed so nice and helpful. It took us about 3 months of looking to decide on our TT and in the mean time I poured over every part of this forum. In the evenings we would sit on the couch and my wife would watch her cooking shows and I would sit for hours on my iPad reading posts. When we finally went to pick up our unit and do our walkthrough I ended up showing the rep how to do more things than he showed me...

I guess in the end, my advise to do what you have been doing.. Pour though the forums, ask questions and know that you guys are about to embark on a wonderful journey...

Welcome to the forum...

Congratulations and welcome! We were in your shoes last year and found just taking things slow and steady, especially when towing was best. in my opinion, checklists are critical when starting out as you don't want to miss anything. As Tex noted too, spending time poring over the forum is also a great learning tool, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Go to a CAT scale on your first trip out and weigh everything and make sure your weight distribution hitch is setup properly.

Dump black tank first and then grey tank!

Make a big list of all the mods you want to do.

A few checklists....

Have fun and congratulations on the new trailer.

The biggest thing I wish I'd known before we purchased: REAL capacities of our tow vehicle and hitch.

I spent hundreds of hours scouring the interwebs learning about trailers. I read every forum I could find, we went to RV shows, we toured dealerships and looked at several different brands. All in all I researched trailers for about 2 years before we finally bought one. I knew more about every trailer we looked at than any salesman did by a LONG way. What I failed to research enough was the capacities of our truck, and what hitch would be required or best for what we were towing with and how we would use it.

A year and a half after we bought the trailer, I upgraded my truck to one more appropriately matched to our trailer (cost me some money, but worth it to me in the end), and I'm looking to upgrade the weight distribution hitch as well; the one we purchased with the trailer is just barely adequate by specifications. If I had known better, I would have insisted on a more capable hitch. The new truck has helped a lot on that front, so the hitch replacement priority has decreased some, but it's still on my radar.

Spend some time researching the REAL capacities of your truck, not what the marketing documents say. If you can, go to a scale under mock conditions as close as you can get to how you'll actually travel so you can get a good idea of the ACTUAL weights you're working with. Don't look at this with rose colored glasses, be honest in your assessment. I THOUGHT I would be comfortable towing right at the limits of my equipment; turns out I wasn't and never fully enjoyed the journey for that first year.

Welcome from down south, see your way north. Are you looking for state side places? If you are NM & AZ are snowbird paradise and FL if you like humidity. Mild weather and no snow! 300+ days of sun down here and if your are interested PM me and I'll get specifics for you.

X2 on what Edd505 said. The area we live (Palm Springs, California) is also very popular with snowbirds. We love the mild winters here, temps in the 70's with lows in the 50's. Most of the population leaves here in the spring to head to cooler climates (It was 118 here last Saturday). Next year we plan on leaving for the summer in our TT so we won't have to suffer through the extreme heat any more. Enjoy your new Jayco!

Hi everyone,

My wife and I will be picking up our new TT tomorrow, 242 BHWS and will be towing it with a 2018 F150 3.5 V6 ecoboost, max towing package and weight distribution hitch. After doing a lot of research, I think we made a good match but would appreciate any advise or comments on our set up. Looking forward to meeting some of you on our travels.

Great TV. Great TT too, and welcome. My limited six year stint hauling tts around has led me to meet countless wonderful folks. I have also had quite a few 'newbie' experiences and maybe can help with some of yours. Your tv should haul 9200 if I read right. Your tt maxes at 7,000. You are good. I chose the 2.7eb because it actually has 500 lb higher capacity that the 3.5eb with regular tow package.
Thank you for your service.

Based on what I've read, unless you have the Limited Supercrew Cab (1430 lbs payload) all of the other 2018 3.5L ecoboost F150 configurations with the max. tow package should pull your trailer very nicely. Max. payloads for the other configurations (cab type and wheel size) are from 2390 ~ 3000 lbs and max. towing is 12,000 or higher. The gross weight of your trailer is 7,000 lbs so even if you use the higher 15% as the tongue weight you've got over 1,000 lbs of payload left over and plenty of pulling power for the trailer.

Enjoy!

BTW, I pulled the information above from the F150 brochure on-line at:

Welcome and enjoy! As was already stated, take your time and go through your checklist. Inspect your campsite pad before pulling in for low limbs. This has bit me a couple times adding a few unwanted scratches to the TT. Take your time and be safe. Enjoy!!
