New to towing tt

On our first trip towing we got a lot of bounce -porpoising between trailer and truck on rough highway at 55 mph and higher

23 ft dual axle Jayco Whitehawk dry weight 4800 lbs
F150 2016 v8 with tow package rated to tow 9700 lbs
Husky centerline weight dist. hitch with sway bars

Truck and trailer not heavily loaded for this short trip Holding tanks and water were empty. Propane about half.

We are not sure what is "'normal'"

Any suggestions?

CONGRATULATIONS on the JAYCO!!!

...and WELCOME TO JOF!!! The members here are GREAT!!! There is a lot of GREAT information to be found here. I am sure that you will have information and pictures to share with us... so please do!!

Can you give us the WEIGHT numbers posted on the inside of your TV's door jam. This will make it easier to come up with a TRUE total for your TV. What GEAR ratio do you have?

You should probably take your entire rig down to the nearest CAT scale to confirm if your hitch is properly adjusted. What's 'normal' is different from truck to truck, but the front end of your truck should feel like it is well planted.

If you are feeling a lot of bouncing on the front end, your hitch probably wasn't setup properly... this is a common problem.

If going to the scales isn't an option and you want to try re-adjusting your hitch at home, go through the manual again, maybe watch a few youtube videos on how to adjust it properly, and go for it. Probably took me 4 hours to set up my hitch the first time, correctly.

I would just check my weight distribution hitch set up.
This is how I get to where I think it is best.
1. Measure front wheel well to ground level.
2. Set WDH to return front wheel well to within 1/4" of normal without trailer.
3. Then I check trailer height to ground at tongue end and at rear.
4. I like my trailer to be about 1" lower in the tongue end no more.
5. I continue to make these adjustments until everything is at target.
Finally, take rig through CAT scales for verification. There is a sticky to walk you through this process.

This should make your towing experience as good as possible.

I have been through WI where there was seems in the highway and the spacing seemed to cause a wave affect that was annoying. Hopefully, this will be helpful.

Best regards,
Doug
