Newby in Georgia
Hello,
I just bought a 2007 Jay Feather 19 Hybrid. This is my first travel trailer of any type. My wife and I were avid car campers for many years but now have 3 kids, age 8, 5, and 3. Packing up the minivan with all our camping gear and setting up at the campsite has become a hassle so we thought we'd switch to a travel trailer where most of the things are already set up and ready to go. My wife has wanted one for years, but I was clinging to tent camping.
I have already made several mistakes but I am learning. Last weekend I thought I was doing a smart thing and caulked over any suspicious areas on the roof with silicone. Now I see that maybe I shouldn't have used silicone. I've also:
1) Set up the electric brake controller on my Mercedes. Not so easy as it should be. The mercedes senses any change to the expected voltage and amperage and throws fault codes like crazy. It works now but it took a while.
2) Replaced all 4 tires. Dry rot had cracked the sidewalls and made me nervous.
3) repacked the bearings and adjusted the brakes.
4) Cleaned the heck out of the exterior and interior and steam cleaned all the upholstery.
5) Set up the Curt leveling hitch that came with it.
Upcoming projects:
Repair the sensors on the black water tank. It always shows 3/4 full.
Fresh water tank drain valve is broken off.
Carbon monoxide alarm is expired.
So far this is not easier than setting up the tents and cots! Ha ha. I do enjoy working on it and I'm sure the fun will start when we get the kids back to nature.
First camping trip is this weekend!
Michael

Welcome and the black water sensors have dozen's of posts on here.
I used to trust mine and worried a lot. Now I ignore the 3/4 red light and it has been just fine.

Ha! I had a warning light like that on my motorcycle once. I tried and tried to fix it and it was really making me mad. Then one day I put black electrical tape over the light and it never bothered me again.

Greetings from North Ga as well! We're just up the road in Winder.
Congrats on the new camper! We're hoping to move into something bigger ourselves. I'm sure your family will love it!

Welcome to the JOF. Loads of great information on here. Many memories to be made. We are also in Georgia, but down south in Vienna. That's just north of Cordele for you city slickers! Lol Set up at the Georgia Good Sam Samboree in Perry, GA right now. Looking for JOF decals! Have a great week all.

Welcome. Your story is familiar. Many of us enjoy working on them as part of ownership.
I was told some years ago by the manufacturer of our tank sensors, that the actual sensing units are very reliable and the problems causing erratic readings are usually the result of a bad ground. I've found that to be true.

HuskerRed,
Congratulations! on the "new-2-u" TT, and welcome to The Forum! I'm an old Husker, myself. Was born in Lincoln, but folks moved away when I was 4 weeks old. Finally returned in '81 and lived there for 10-1/2 years. Joining the Big 10 made it a whole lot easier to follow the Huskers, since I'm an MSU alum.
Hope you and your family enjoy your new camping experiences!

Many thanks for the warm welcome! We are heading out tomorrow afternoon for our "maiden voyage." I'm pretty excited. Forecast is for rain, but better to be in a camper in the rain than a tent. I guess we'll find out if she leaks!
