Take me away!

Hi folks,

I grew up camping and loved it during my entire childhood from the first camper my step dad and I built on the back of a 1967 Chevy pickup. Most of my camping in early adult years was tent camping, which I had gotten away from last few years.

Well, it's time to get back to it. My wife and I just purchased a Jay Feather 7 and are heading out this afternoon for our maiden voyage. It will be nearby so we can get the bugs out, but already planning two more long distance trips.

I am looking forward to sharing stories, getting help and offering help on here. I am mechanically inclined and will catch on to all maintenance soon, but will be looking here for help first. I am amazed to look at the Jayco website and see that it is so lacking in tutorial videos.

Why post here when there's YouTube?
Welcome!
Hope you have an uneventful shakedown! We did our shakedown at Tanglewood.

I'm one of the red-headed stepchildren...Starcraft owner.
There is lots of good info and ideas for mods on this site. Just don't ask how much trailer a 1/2 ton pickup can handle.

Depends on who you are talking to. Salesmen will lie through their teeth to sell you a trailer.

You need to look at the pick up manufacturer says their vehicles will tow. You can find that info online by Googling, as an example, 2014 Ford F150 Tow Guide

Keep in mind, their are many variables such as engine size, rear wheel ratio etc. Also, factor in "Payload". If you buy a trailer that may have a 7500 gross weight rating and you load it that heavy, you could have a hitch weight of up to 1125 pounds. If your truck has a payload of 1700 pounds, that leaves you with only 575 pounds of people and things that can go inside the truck.

Now if you tow a fifth wheel, that is all different and I will admit that there are more knowledgeable folks on this forum than me on that subject.
