Smile Which Truck for 38FLSA

Hello, I am the proud owner of a 2016 Jayco Pinnacle 38FLSA and am shopping trucks. I plan to drive the truck locally, eventually purchase a "topper" for the truck and [without the topper] tow the Pinnacle back and forth between Oregon and California.

I am wanting to know if there is a "range of trucks" to choose from?

Some people have told me get a Dodge 3500 Diesel 6.7, Dually, 410 gears to get the 29,000 tow capacity.

I witnessed my trailer EMPTY getting towed with a RAM 2500 > seemed okay to me; the driver told me yeah its okay because the trailer is fully empty but you will need the 3500 to tow the trailer's 16,000 pound weight capacity.

After looking on the Internet in other states such as Texas, Iowa, Florida I found 2012 3500's for under $20,000 > they sell FAST! I would like to buy a truck to tow my trailer. Doesnt have to be a 4 door, I don't really need 4WD, but I do like that auto-breaking thing I saw on YouTube.

Any suggestions appreciated. I am not in a huge hurry to purchase a truck. With a little luck I think I could find the truck that can do the job for $10k to $16K > already saw one but it sold yesterday.

Our 2016 Pinnacle has only ONE quirk so far. BUT it's not Jayco's problem. It is an appliance matter. The Dimplex fireplace heater when left on for hours and hours REFUSES to turn off using the remote; MUST hit the breaker. After it cools down you can reuse it like normal but the behavior repeats even turning the heater down 20 degrees so its not about that. I bought a SEVEN year warranty for my entire coach but of course you MUST tow the trailer to the dealer for the warranty work to be free of charge. My warranty is $100 deductible; which is nice. So thus far we are happy campers in the Pinnacle. The california king Denver super firm pillow top mattress works great. Took me a while to get used to the bed, felt lumpy or odd BUT since living in the trailer I have NEVER woke with a back ache!! Yes ^5 Denver mattress! Impressive.

Looking forward to truck suggestions, websites, forums and further advice.

Thanks in advance.

Harry

So, you'll be using the truck elsewhere..not just camping? I wouldn't get a dually then. They're monsters to park. Try parking it on Dec 23rd in a mall parking lot! The dually's are great vehicles..just big and not the best choice if you decide to use it as an everyday vehicle. I would definitely get a 1 ton though. 4:10 locking rear is probably best but mileage will suffer. The Cummins will surely yank it. So will the F350.

TY

So now it's clear s 3500 or F350 IS NEEDED to tow my Punnacle's 16,000-18,000 lbs so my thinking is dodge 3500 dually 4:10 Cummings 6.7 provides 29k pull. I see 2012's that are exciting values. I want that auto engine breaking I saw on s 2015 Laramie. Can I put that on my truck if it doesn't have it?

Thanks again

That trailer has a dry hitch weight of 3095lbs. Loaded up it will be heavier. 3500 -4000lbs???

What is the max payload you can get for a SRW 1 ton? I think you will be looking at dually's for the payload capacity.

What year trucks are you looking at that are in your price range?

Towing Guides | fleet.ford.ca

Most SRW payloads are around 3500lbs. There are a few regular cab models that will get you up around 4000lbs but for that trailer you need more in my opinion.

Keep an eye on payload for anything you are looking at.

Yes you will be able to narrow it down to a 1 ton Diesel. The Dodge is a good choice. Depends on the model and year as to how it's equipped.
No matter, make sure you get something with a tow package. High capacity alternator, transmission oil cooler and brake controller.

So many decisions.

I think all modern diesel engines from the big three will have exhaust breaks standard. Here is a 2014 test of them....

Yeah, all the coolers are great to have. (trans, p/s, engine oil, etc.)

Am thinking 2012 Tradesman, Crew Cab or Laramie Cummins, Dually, 4:10 or the 390-whatever, I want the hitch kit with 4 holes in bed liner > plan to get a Topper. I think I can do this for $20k or less > already found exact truck 40,000 miles and of course it sold same day it was listed!

Most any Diesel Dually will have a tow package. Why did you not want a "tow Brake" thing? Stopping is just as important when pulling as going!

Most trucks that you are considering will have it.

We were looking at a the SLT Bighorn line. Kinda in between.

I have one data reference point for you.
We pull with an F350 6.7 SRW 2WD. Our Rear Axle GAWR is 6730# and the CAT Scale tells me that our rear axle weighs 3360# loaded to travel WITHOUT the 5er. Our 5th has 3020# on the pin and hooked up the rear axle carries 6240#. Our 5er GVW is 12780#.
BTW, I think my "Tow/Haul" mode is very helpful as is the integrated brake control.

Hello congrats on the new 5th wheel. The Ram 2500 is not rated to carry the pin weight of your camper.

I have 2014 Ram 3500, CTD, SRW, CC, 4X4, 68RFE with 3.42 Gears. My door sticker states I am able to carry 3,900 in the bed. Whatever truck you look at be sure to look at the door sticker. Different options will change the tow capacity, and all of the other measurements.

Also, the 4:10 I don't believe was an option with the 68RFE with CTD. You will have to get the Aisin Transmission to get the steeper gear or possible the 6.4 Hemi.

Good Luck! I love my RAM!!

Just a FYI The transmissions are the weak link on dodges along with the front ends. If buying used get it checked out by certified tech.

Which Truck for 38FLSA

I have 2014 ram 3500 srw loaded and have 4074 payload. I pull 16-17k. If I were u, I would go with dually. Also, the major ram redesign for the 3500's was either 2013 or 2014 (much stronger frame and other things...my 14 has 800ft lbs torque as I didn't get the aisin...I wish I had it and if I was keeping the toy hauler longer, I would order a dually with aisin and 3.73's). Ram srw only come in 3.42 rear end
