Always reverting to not logged on

When I attempt to enter a response I get the not logged on message despite having logged in. Why is this happening?

Do you have cookies blocked?

Logging in

Once you have registered you may login to post or search our database.

You will see a log in box in the upper right hand corner. Enter your username and password (these are case sensitive) and then click the 'remember me' box.

Our site exchanges little bits of data called cookies with your computer to keep you logged in at page changes. Many virus protection programs or your computers own safety settings (if set very high) may be deleting these cookies when you navigate away from a page and then you get logged off. You can try the following things:
Set your system security settings to medium.
Be sure that you have enabled cookie handling.
Check your Virus protection software and firewall settings to be sure that cookie handling is not being blocked there - you can specifically allow cookie exchange with the site.
At the end of your visit, you can log out or just navigate away from our site. Our server will automatically sever your connection after a period of time.

If you have forgotten your password and cannot login, you may request a new one via the contact us link located at the bottom of each page. You do not need to be logged in to use this link.

Running on Mac. Cookies enabled. Apparently the timeout is set very short and if you try to provide a thoughtful answer you must continually log in. Pain.

When I first get to the forum page I click on log in. That's what I did to get here and I can enter stuff. But if I am on for a while it appears that I lose the log in and must redo.

It may be the device you are using is not showing the "remember me" box? If you click on that box before logging in you will stay logged on indefinitely.

Crabman, yes the Remember Me box is there. I clicked on Remember Me a while back and it kept the PW so all I had to do was click on Log In on subsequent visits. I thought Remember Me just saved my PW so I didn't have to enter it each time. Unless I click on Log In at each visit I can't respond (only view) and there's no Log Out option (if my memory serves me right).

No you have to click on the remember me box when you log in each time, if you have logged out. If you do not log out you will always be logged on after clicking on the remember me box. I just never log out so I stay logged on 24/7.

I think this is cookie related - we use them to keep you logged in at page changes. You'll need to check in several places to make sure that cookie handling is enabled..

Your browser
Your security programs

Both of these have settings to purge cookies at page changes and I think this is the issue. You are getting logged out anytime you change a page on the site.

The default time for our server to sever your connection is quite long - on the order of 30 mins after there is no activity navigating around the site.

OK I did a little test. I logged out and then logged in again WITHOUT clicking the remember me box. Within twenty minutes of no forum activity I tried to post and was logged out. So If I do not click on that box I experience the same short time that I am logged in that others have reported which would indeed be frustrating if typing a long post or PM. So you must click on that box when logging in.....

I learned the hard way to type my post up first in a document and then copy it in but Ok, I checked the "remember me" box so we'll see.

I'm not sure on a Mac but on my laptop and desktop I have the option of clearing cookies on exit which would mean every time you close your browser the cookies would clear. Does a Mac have something similar?

When I started to reply to this thread I got the "you're not logged on" message. So not timing out because of thinking. I did not click "remember me" before logging in.
I do log off when I'm done and get cookies cleared message…which should be OK as I log on each time. I'll just have to tell system to remember me and not think too much about my replies. And live with the quirks.

That's it for sure. I just never log off or clear my cookies. Ever.

I have had a lot of trouble logging back on to this site so I gave up for a long time. When I tried again and again it didn't work so I gave up for another long while. Today I decided to try again and still had trouble. This time trying to get a new password. When trying to change my password a page came up that said the administrator wanted me to register so I just changed my name and email. That worked, voila, I'm on. Hope this new password and name works for me every time. We will see.

Not sure why this happened unless you repeatedly entered the wrong name or password and got locked out of the system. To prevent this click on the "remember me" box and do not log out when you leave the site. You will still be logged in the next time you visit the forum so no need to enter a password again.
