An advertiser inconsistent with JOF?

I just noticed an advert for concealed carry permits.

Personally I am a 2nd Amendment supporter.

But it has been made very clear that the management of JOF does not support the discussions of firearms and their use in this forum.

I realize that the ever-shifting advertising around the edges is not under the moderators' direct control. But isn't some feedback to the advertising agency regarding what is and is not consistent with the desires of the display space in order?

Most ads on web browsers are not controlled by the site you are on (in this case JOF) they are based on your browsing history. The mods probably won't even see the same ads you do unless they browse the same sites you do.

90% of online advertising now is tailored to the user.

i.e. I searched for new bed spreads on amazon last night for our camper because my dog ate it. Now I see ads for bedspreads on almost every website I go to. "they" know what you are interested in. I have an ad blocker on most of my computers, so I don't see any ads unless I want to. Just a thought...

paggy beat me to it

Amazon is one of the worst for that. I bet they sell every bit of information on you!

I think paggy has nailed it. You are getting these adds on your screen because at some point you visited a site or otherwise expressed some interest in firearms. Other viewers may be getting completely different ads or none at all, depending on their ad blocking software.

Excepting the fact that I don't own any firearms, I'm not a member of the NRA, haven't visited any 2nd Amendment sites since switching to Firefox...

I can see getting inundated by car part ads, Diesel tractor stuff, RV accessories, Linux and Raspberry Pi stuff, but carry permits?!?!

Maybe because a few of us New Yorkers on another forum got into a lively debate over where the border between Upstate and Downstate is?

I'm getting a TOR account and only visiting the web via Onion from now on!

I've been on their list for years!

I buy "2600: The Hacker's Quarterly" magazine from the bookstore every now and again.

If that doesn't prove I'm a agent of subversion, I'll have to turn in my Blue Box!

That used to be free on the Kindle, not sure if it still is. I think that's how I initially made the list. My girlfriend (now wife) thinks it was from buying the Anarchist's cookbook back in the 80's. I've derailed this thread enough for one day

Just grab Tails. It is one of the easier ways to get up and running on TOR.

Wonder why I get constant advertisements for milk. I have never searched for it nor gone to a website to buy it.

Happy Camping

I got mine locked down pretty tight. The only ads I see on the JOF is
Do it Yourself RV and the 4 boxes at the bottom of the screen saying you may also like. That is all I see.

I've been an internet consultant and developer since the birth of the web - and part of what I still do is consult with companies to help them throw those ads at you :-).

You're thinking too specifically about this - the algorithms that advertisers can set don't have to be specific.
YES - if you search for bed spreads, that will Definitely get you more ads for bedspreads. But it will also set a flag that you're shopping for "home goods" and you'll start seeing ads for all kinds of vendors (like Home and Decor) and products, like rugs.

Firearms are in a general category with camping and outdoor equipment. So since we all pretty much shop for things in that category, we're all likely to see firearm ads.
As I'm typing this, I currently have an ad on the screen for a backpacking tent - my days of backpacking have been over for about 20 years but it's "camping equipment".

You think Firearm ads may not be appropriate? I run quite a few non-profit and faith based websites (mostly for churches). Some of those thought they could pay their hosting fees by putting ads on their site. Yea - right :-). Web site owners can set flags to reject ads from "adult" products - but that doesn't always stop ads that various faith groups consider wildly inappropriate - like ads for some of the movies today LOL.
This is especially true if you imbed or post a YouTube video - when it ends no telling WHAT video's will be promoted. Can you picture Grandma's reaction when a "Girls Gone Wild" video promotion comes up on her Church's page :-).

It's just a part of modern life - I think most web surfers realize that the ads are totally disconnected from the site owner.
