Naked Campers told to put clothes on.

Thought you would get a small chuckle out of this actual "news audio clip" I found this morning.

I didn't even know what "burning man" was, I finally got fed up and had to ask my wife about it (was afraid to Google it). Naked in the desert doesn't sound like a good time, especially drunk or stoned.

I just spent about 20 minutes perusing the "Burning Man" event website. I saw no references at all concerning naked, clothing optional or anything of that nature.

It appears the slant being posed here is that it is naked free-for-all event. Not so from what I read.

It does appear to be an interesting yet challenging annual event. It's all about community and zero environmental impact when the event is over.

That's the risk I take not looking it up for myself. I just don't care enough to go look for myself...

We have been... back in 2006 sometime (give or take 2/3 years) We towed our old 1972 Aristocrat 14ft trailer.

Some tips for those who are interested and adventurous:

DO NOT take your own RV - Rent one. There are dust storms that are frequent and it is everywhere.

Expect to pay the entire cleaning deposit to the rental agency - you will never get it clean enough to get your deposit back.

Haul an extra trailer with the most important thing you will need - more water!

Bring an old bicycle for each person, spare tires, spare tubes and spare chain

Bring dozens of dust masks, a pair of hearing protection ear plugs and goggles

Bring an open mind, you don't have to be clothing optional (but a lot of the participants are)

Bring items to use as trade (cashless event) Fresh fruit is popular for something you might need.

Get out and wander around Black Rock City - it is amazing what other camps have come up with, built and displayed. Go see the amazing art structures and Art Cars. Some wild contraptions, and some amazing artwork. (I am not fond of typical art, this stuff is mostly alt-art) It makes you scratch your head and wonder why, how?, Who? and mostly WOW!

That's why we spend extra on day/night shades. LOL

It keeps us from having to gouge out our eyes!!

Well my, my. First of all, just because you go to Burning Man doesn't mean you have to 'get naked'. Very few actually do. I went in 2002 and while there were the occasional topless campers, I think I only saw a single male who was wearing a top hat and boots. Nothing in between.

It is quite an event, and requires loads of preparation. Water is the big one, with me bringing 3 five gallon containers, enough freeze dried food and an Igloo cooler. They only things for sale there is ice, which I used to replenish my supply or water and coffee/tea in the main camp pavilion. Anything else is considered not really barter but rather if you feel like giving someone something, they may feel like giving you something in return. I brought multiple emergency water pouches and would 'trade' them or more accurately gift them to people I ran across. Sometimes in return you might get invited to a happy hour or to watch a movie or at times, just a hearty thanks.

There are also lots of opportunities to either volunteer or camp with folks who you share some interests. If you watch the video posted here you can see the Lamplighters around 11:50, which was the camp I stayed with. In exchange for a daily evening procession around the camps to light kerosene lanterns, you get to camp with some people who share a morning and evening meal. We all took turns cooking and cleaning up. Meant I didn't eat quite as much freeze dried food as I had expected! Also volunteered for a few shifts at the coffee house, in exchange for free coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Fascinating set of clientele, let me tell you!

Some really odd folks do attend and most of the really fascinating stuff is all the art installations around the 'city' off in the desert. No cars or motorized vehicles are allowed unless they are 'art' cars, as in completely disguised as something else. I saw a pair of bunny slippers in pink, that were actually golf carts I think. Another was an old military green school bus that had a pirate ship built on top of it with a live band playing as they slowly cruised around.

Have to see where I stored those pix and post some later. It was an amazing visit though I expect quite different today with all the money coming from LA or SFO and bringing their catered RV camps with chefs and body guards. Oh well... and yeah, I agree, I would never bring my own RV. 16 years later, I still has some of that alkali dust on an old pair of boots!

Definitely Burning Man is on our bucket list. The nudity is not an issue with us. We have been to a couple nudist campgrounds and frequent nude beaches. Thanks for the tip about not bringing own trailer. Maybe I will buy an older camper just for something like that. In case there is any real damage you're not out a lot.
