Retail Help

I was at a big box home improvement store we'll call Lows. [emoji6]

" Can I get two 18" sections of this chain?"

"No. We only sell it by the foot."

"Ah okay. I'll tell you what, I'll buy three feet. Would you mind cutting it in half?"

"Sure. No problem! "

I'm not certain he realized he just sold me two 18" sections of that chain even after he measured out 18" and handed them to me. [emoji3]

I swear this to be true:

At McDonald's: "I want half dozen McNuggets."

Counter: "I'm sorry, we only have 3 , 6 and 9".

We must be thankful the cash register tells them how much change.

Was in line at the pharmacy several years ago when the power blipped. Manager announced that it would take about ten minutes for the point-of-sale registers to reboot, so those with credit cards would have to wait. I was picking up one generic prescription and knew my copay would be $6 even, so I stepped up to the counter.

The high school aged girl told me it was $6 and I handed her a ten. After hesitating a few seconds she began counting on her fingers and mumbling under her breath, "7, 8, 9, 10." She became very red-faced when I blurted out, "That's cheating!"

If it was $6.13 you'd still be standing there.

I think I know where part of the problem with the youngsters come from.

A friend of mine's girlfriend was a 3rd grade teacher. A bunch of people were planning a trip to Las Vegas.

Teacher says "No way I'm going, I'm not going to fly out of the country with the way things are going overseas now".

I guess I look at this situation a bit differently. When I was growing up the lumber yard/hardware store in our town had been started by the then owners Grandfather. The men in that business, at that time, were 60-80 years of age. They had grown up in that business. They had skin in the game. No customer ever questioned if they were getting the lowest price or where they could get it cheaper. When the big box stores came to be all this changed. Probably no one working in them actually considers them a profession, it is "just a job". Why has this happened ? Because for most when we need to buy something, the first words we utter are " Who has the best price?" We only become concerned with seller skills when we need advice or service. One thing big box stores do not sell is long term commitment to their customer.

Years ago, we were assigned to an AFB in New Mexico. I called a "as seen on TV" number to order some useless product. After giving the address with zip code, the sales person apologized but stated their policy will not allow them to ship outside of the United States... karma told me I really didn't need that widget.

Full timers but still active duty AF, anxiously awaiting retirement travels where I have been told everyday is a Saturday

Many years ago I was a delivery driver for a Mobil Oil distributor. One morning when delivering gasoline to one of the stations we serviced I went inside to get a "snack" while pumping off product. They had cupcakes for .13 cents apiece or "2 for .29 cents" - when I told the girl at the cash register I wanted to buy them separate she insisted that it was cheaper for me to get them "2 for .29"! I had a hard time getting her to understand their mistake.
