Close to my home base we have a major north/south freeway & shopping area that has THREE (3) roundabouts tied into the freeway on/off ramps....., talk about a nightmare

New England tends to like them a lot, wreaking havoc on small coastal towns during the summer months.

These are easy to maneuver after a few lessons from the Stevie Wonder Driving Institute!

Just close your eyes and go!

I have visited Ireland a few times and really didn't mind the roundabouts. In Ireland they are everywhere. The roundabouts keep traffic moving and no use of a stop light to tie things up. We here in America just are not used to them.

We have a few down the road from the house and several throughout the state.
The state DOT claims they are much safer than 4-way intersections.

Just come and visit Wisconsin, we have become round-about crazy here! Some call them Rotarys.

AZ didn't get the memo and have been building roundabouts like crazy. Those things scare me. The drivers in them scare me even more!

A town near here tried to get fancy and make a round-a-bout. Guess they should have measured the fire departments equipment. First emergent run with the ladder truck and it wouldn't fit without grinding tires on the curbs so they got mad and drove right through the center of it. It was rebuilt bigger, I can't stand them.

Washington State in my area has gone roundabout crazy. There's a shopping area 6 miles from my house that has 5 roundabouts within 2 miles. Quite handy really, just watch out for the suicidals.

I encountered a couple in Colorado Springs, CO last year.
It took a day or so to get comfortable with them.

They're starting to build some around here in the areas that have lighter traffic. They don't bother me, but it's still amusing to watch someone who's never seen one before.

As for strange intersections, this is a real sign for a real intersection here. Every time I drive through it, I have to think ahead as to where I want to go, to make sure I'm in the right lane. And I've lived in this city my whole life!

I'm seeing more and more of them in Georgia.
One problem is that they take a lot more land than a stop light or sign intersection. In heavily developed areas sometimes the amount of property that has to be condemned to convert makes them too expensive. Be we're seeing them in developing or rural areas.

I guess what makes them safer is that accidents tend to be side or glancing blows rather than the T Bone collisions you get when people run a red light or stop sign.

Growing up in Ill we had them back in the 50's. Today we have a number of them in Arizona. They seem to be all the rage for the last 10 years or so. Only problem is, people have no clue how to use them, when used properly they work great.

We have them here in SC and a big one is currently going in on my drive off of James Island.
I hope it's big enough to accommodate my fifth wheel cause it's one of only 2 possible ways to get off this island.

There is a sign similar to that one on the southeast side of Paris, Texas. I'll try to get a picture the next time I'm in the area.

We used to have a whole lot of them where I live/work/grew up.

Some have been cleaned up and upgraded. Many have been removed in favor of ramped interchanges.

Anyone who knew the Hawthorne Circle in Westchester, NY in the 1960's (3 parkways, 2 state highways and a local street) will understand why highway engineers tend to not consider roundabouts (Traffic Circles in my part of the world) as a viable solution.

Also, getting off the NY Thruway in Kingston is just so much FUN!

My daily commute includes 2 traffic circles (3 on the 'alternate path). Give me a well designed interchange or an intersection with a traffic light any day.

EDIT: Just read where this was posted. **NEVERmind**

We have several in our area. While I don't mind them in general some of them were not thought out very well. As mentioned by a previous poster some are so tight that trucks cant get around them without driving over half of it. There is one not far from me that is so tight I have hard time just using my truck in it. Of course they allow parking on the side of the street all the way up to it and of course that spot is always taken so you have to enter it from the extreme left side so as not to hit the parked vehicle and again so tight that is actually tough to get around it in my truck much less pulling the trailer which would be a total no go.
