A small slice of life on the Chesapeake, Almost Heaven

Here are a few pics from the Crab house. I know not everyone on this forum gets to see this kind of stuff everyday like me, if ever, so I thought I would post these shots. (I`m not selling anything, I`ve dealt with the same folks for years), just sharing some educational info. The first one are soft crabs in a shedding tank, next are soft crabs fresh packed, next are hard crabs caught today.

Backing practice

My truck backed down on the dock. I have backed a 27' crab pot trailer down this dock, the tire tracks are only slightly wider then the tires on the vehicle. Its good backing practice, little room for error though!

Hey Crabman, when you aren't crabbing, camping, or giving tafische a hard time, do you ever have time to watch Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel? It's one of my favorites.....you have an interesting job. Thanks for sharing the photos of your operation.

When you see the pics of the crabhouse and its rustic appearance keep in mind it was wrecked twice by hurricanes, and suffered extensive damage from Winter storms/flooding in 2010. During a hurricane the storm surge lifts the tanks up off their racks and carries them up the creek, pipes, pumps, refrigerators, wiring, lumber and even crabs went with them! The water level was about halfway up the door in Gloria (1985) and Floyd (1999). That`s why we do not get too fancy, we know we will have to fix it up again sooner or later.

We have very observant neighbors in the adjacent homes and only boat access helps. Not to mention we show up at some crazy hours and there is that little part of the second amendment on premises. Our biggest thieves are crows and gulls, believe it or not! But wire covers on the tanks keeps them at bay now.

Hey Crabman, If we come to Kiptopeke State Park will you feed us?

The best oysters in the world used to come from the Chesapeake Bay, sure wish they could make a comeback. I like them fried.

Actually the bay oysters are making a bit if a comeback with improving numbers and harvest rates in The James River, Rappahannock River, and Tangier and Pocomoke sounds. It seems the native oysters are developing a bit of a resistance to the dreaded MSX disease that nearly wiped them out. Aquaculture farming of clams and oysters is also producing promising results.

OK we will park your trailer on the end of the dock for a great view. Strictly boondocking though, no hookups!

Being somewhat proud of my ability to back a boat trailer (TT a different story!) and driving a 30 ft. Zodiac Hurricane mil-spec I sure would like to get out there and work a couple of days.

Saw some duct tape and I am mostly Canadian. Except for the American part. Work cheap too.
