Asst. scoutmaster while the 2 boys were scouting.Did a lot of winter camping, great fun. I was lucky enough to go to Philmont in '59 ( parents paid $189.00). We did it by bus, from Worcester Ma. thru Niagra Falls to Detroit, went to the Ford Rotunda, a mini test track,& an assembly plant. We then went to Chicago to see the German sub , U444 (I think), and the awsome museum right next to it. Stopped at Boy's town, Ne, Cheyenne Wo ( went to a dance put on by the girl scouts), Air Force Academy & a Colo. Indian publeo then on to Philmont for two weeks of backing in the N.M. mountains( thanks to the mules for carrying the heavy stuff). We stayed at army & air force bases ,some along old rt 66, on the way home .I can still remember that trip after 52yrs. Pack 26 ,then on to Scout Troop 557(Fox Patrol) ,Circle 10 Council ,Dallas in the 50/60's.
Our son did Cub scouts but just didnt get into Scouting.I still have my first Handbook and keep it in the gunsafe,it means a lot to me.When I see it I glance thru it and think about some really good times and some very decent men & women(Cub Scout days,DEN Mothers) that helped keep me on the right path.

Loved those winter camp outs. A few times waking up in the morning with a foot of snow on the tent. They don't make winters now like they did in the 50's Wet fire wood, great times. Couldn't cook till you got fire going.

I was in Troop 106, made Eagle Scout in 1969 and was in the Order of the Arrow
Great times, Great Friends, even burned down a tent one winter
Did the National Jamboree in 1969 in Idaho, great trip. We went to Glacier National Park after the Jamboree and over into Canada sight seeing.
My brothers big scout trip was to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
My daughter was in Girl Scouts and her big scout trip was to Europe for 2 weeks 16 years ago when she was 15.

A happy belated Scouting anniversary day which is Feb 8, and a big thank you to all the fellow Scouters here on the forum and everywhere. Your contributions to the young men of your communities is priceless. 101 yrs of Scouting here in the US. And the longest running continuous Scouting event in the nation occurs next weekend at Valley Forge National Park, Pa., 100 years for that particular event.

Boy Scout Troop 324, Longhorn Council, Ram Patrol, Hurst, Texas. Order of the Arrow. Received my Eagle Scout on May 13, 1974.
Those were great times. Formulated my love of nature and the outdoors.

As my username implies, I am a proud Scouter. I was in Cubbies as a young boy but never made it to Boy Scouts due to other obligations. I am very proud of my 15 year old son who is now a life scout and actively working towards his Eagle. My Scouter positions include, pack/troop committee chair, assistant scoutmaster, and district commissioner.
My son, wife and I spent 12 days at Philmont with our troop spending many nights setting up our tent and sleeping on the ground and decided it was time for a Jayco. We are now the proud owners of a 2007 26L and are loving every minute of it. Although I suspect we will still be spending a few nights on the ground in our tent (our troop frowns on this type of "roughing" it).
I am so glad I have found this forum. I love to see the mods everyone has done to their TT's and TV's. Your group has been so inviting in regards to newcomers and I for one thank you for your hospitality.
Yours in Scouting,
Jim

Welcome to all the fellow Scouters who have recently joined. I am both surprised and humbled to report that I was awarded the District Award Of Merit on March 17. I had no clue it was coming until an announcement at our District leader recognition dinner. Some of my fellow Scouters conspired to recommend me for the award.

I have been a scouter for 14 years. With the pack and the troop. I was treasurer and then committee chair for the pack. With the troop I am treasurer and the training advancement coordinator. I am a counselor for several merit badges. I have been the proud parent of an Eagle Scout for 3 years. DS is in college and no longer active with the troop, but I am still there most Tuesday nights.

I am an Eagle Scout. I was a very hard core backpacker in my youth. I went to Philmont 5 times. One trek it rained for 10 days straight, and smiled every minute. I have hiked and canoed the Boundary Waters, Isle Royal, Smokey Mountains, the Rocky Mountains. Solo hiked a number of times. My kid is a cub scout and we (cub scouts) camp on the ground and I have no issues with it. My DW would prefer to be up high and dry. We have compromised, we have a hybrid now and I took the TV out. I still tent camp just not as much as I would like.

My oldest daughter was a Girl Scout in the 1980s. I was one escort for her group on a trip from Maryland to Lake Champlain. The Scoutmaster was deathly afraid of water, to the point that only those of us with maps knew we were camping on the lake. What with day trips and enough trees acting as a visual barrier, some of the girls were unaware of the lake's presence until the final night's party at the pavilion overlooking it!
Personally, I went to Boy Scout summer camp probably around 1955. Allowing for memory lapses here, I was to receive badges or whatever recognition was given for archery and a 5-mile hike. Well, Somebody lost the signed-off records, and on our next meeting back home I was told "tough." That didn't sit well with me. Can't recall whether I quit or was kicked out, but that was my last night as a Scout.
It's hard to believe that that fine organization has come under fire for believing in God and opposing what was considered a perversion prior to PCism.

Was involved in Girl Scouts from 1st grade through Jr. High (they call it middle school now. Brownies, Girl Scouts and Cadets. There wasn't a program around for Sr. High girls, so I did Jr. Achievement instead.

Eagle Scout checking in here.. Troop 102 in Texarkana Texas. Earned My Eagle in the mid 80's and consider it one of my greatest accomplishments... My 11 year old son just crossed over to Boy Scout and I have become actively involved with his troop. I have made a rule for him that he cant get his drivers license if he doesn't have his Eagle .. I don't think that will be a problem.. I think the Boy Scouts is one of the best organizations left in this country. I still use lots of the knowledge I learned from scouting and it instills some great values in young men... GO SCOUTS!!!!
