Welcome to the forum, Tex! No Eagle, no license, good rule! My soon to be 12 yr old crossed over last year and is now almost First Class. Two ten yr old twins that will cross over next year. I`m still currently an Asst SM and Webelos ll leader for the troop and pack. When the twins cross over it will only be one position for me and just one meeting a week! Can`t wait for that,its tough doing both.

I'm originally from Scotland and moved to Canada 10 years ago in my early 20's.

I was a Scout in the early 90's with the 13th East Kilbride troop in Scotland, highest rank I got was APL (Assistant Patrol Leader). Went to lots of places camping, up until the Scout leader cooked potatoes using water he found coming out of a hose. You can see where this is going, over half of us got food posioning and after that my parents pulled me from the Scouts. I still remember my Dad saying something along the lines of "well if they can't cook tatties properly how can I expect them to look after a bunch of kids!"

Some of you guys are making me feel old. I'm an Eagle Scout from the 1960's. Since I only had 2 daughters, I joined my wife as a Girl Scout leader and would take the girls camping. I was also usually the only guy at council leader meetings. And for any of you patch collectors out there, I was an original member of Lodge 352 of the Order of the Arrow - that's the Zhingwak Lodge and it is about the most sought after flap patch among collectors. I had 3 of those patches, sold two 20 years ago for about $200 each. I don't know what that last one is worth today but maybe it will help with the college tuition!

Is it true in the UK Scout leaders are allowed to have adult beverages there when camping? I heard that, always wondered if it was true. I also heard the Scouts were not allowed to use pocketknives there. But both of those are hearsay.

I would not say that they were allowed to drink, but regardless they did. In fact I can remember a trip when I was 15 when we were buying beer from the leaders for a pound for a tall boy. The best part was the beer was called Tennent Lager and the can had a lady posing in a bikini! As a 15 y/o it was almost a 2 for 1 deal!!! ha-ha. The legal drinking age is 18.

In terms of pocket knifes, I only ever remember using one under direct supervision and it was not my own. The UK, Scotland in particular has a huge problem with knifes, stabbings and and cutting to the face that now it has reached a point where you cannot be caught carrying any kind of knife with a blade of less than 2 inches.

I was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout back in the early 60's. When my sons became interested in Scouts I was thrilled and became a leader. I was a Den Leader, Asst. Pack Leader, Asst. Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Committee Chair, District Eagle Advisor. Both of my sons went all the way and are Eagle Scouts. Our Troop was very active; Summer camp every year, Klondike Derby's, Kayaking trips on the Delaware River,hiked Gettysburg, Valley Forge, Monmouth Battlefield, one year we had a crew at Philmont, Sea Base Bahamas, and the Boundary Waters in Minnesota (can't remember the name). My wife was a cooking merit badge counselor and she had her "students" cook one of the troop meals at the Klondike. Scouting was a great time for us and still the subject of great family memories.

I was born and raised in Hawaii, then moved to the mainland in the fall of '94. Met my wife here in Los Angeles and never moved back home. Where I lived and scouted, because of distance we never even dreamed about things like National Jamborees or Philmont. Heck, I never even saw a travel trailer or RV until I was 20 years old (where would you go with one in Hawaii?!) But I look back on my time in scouting as some of the best years of my life. I've camped in rain forests where we got 3 inches of rain overnight. Occasionally we would have troops come from the midwest for a few weeks during summer at Camp Maluhia (Mah-loo-hee-yah). I'll never forget hiking with one Star Scout from Kansas and I was with him when he saw the ocean for the first time in his life. Blew my mind. :hihi:

Ha! Sure would be a little difficult, but I suppose you could drag a sled across the sand, no? Or does it lose too much of the effect?

We go to one every Winter and to be honest I can only remember one that had snow on the ground. Most of the sleds have wheels on them here. But its usually cold as its held in January or Feb. The main thing is the boys work together and solve problems or do fun things at the various stations.

Chief Scout Ryan here from the 1st Morinville Scouting Movement. Started back in the early 80's. A lot fun back then, but could not convince my oldest to get into it (he's more of a sports kind of guy anyway). Maybe when my girls get older I'll see if they are interested in girl guides. Spent many a cold night camping outdoors in northern Alberta. Good times

I was in scouting for a long time. Even after I was too old to be an "official" scout I continued to help the troop out. Some of my fondest memories as a youth were spent camping with troop 777 in Rosewood Heights, IL. I remember camping in the coldest of February with our sleeping bags insulated in straw bales for the Klondike Derby and great summers at Camp Warren Levis in Godfrey, IL. The friends I still enjoy are some of my former troop members. I think kids today don't understand what they are missing.

Troop 48 Lynchburg, VA just completed their 7th Annual Brunswick Stew, Saturday, January 19, 2013.
We use two 65 gallon pots, wood fired. The scouts earned 100% of the profit to be used for summer camp or a high adventure trip. Their portion is determined by the number of hours they work.

Eagle Scout here. Pack and Troop 285, Raytown, Missouri from 1983 to 1991, then joined the Air Force in 1992. Camp counselor from 1989-1991 at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation in central Missouri. Yeah, I still enjoy passing the wilderness survival skills onto my daughter, but now we have a Pinnacle 36REQS. So much for roughing it!

I was in the Webelos and Boy Scouts back in the early 70s. Now that I think about it that was a long time ago. A great experience and my time in both groups provided me with knowledge and skills and ethics I still use today.

Now my grandson and son-in-law are looking to get in to scouting when my 5 year old grandson is old enough.

Greetings all,
Father of two boys, aged 10 and 12. The 10 year old is one week of crossing over from WEBELOS to the Troop. The 12 year old is a Life Scout. I have served as a Cub Scout Leader, Assistant Cub Master, and Cub Master. Currently Assistant Scout Master and Unit Commissioner. In my "free time" I have taken Wood Badge, Powderhorn, and served on Camp Staff as Health and Safety Officer.
My boys and I camp with the Troop every month, but we are looking forward to picking up the White Hawk 28 DSBH this month!
