Trouble is, when the tide gets really high (like when there's a storm in the Gulf of Mexico), the "tide" laps up against the dunes (so there's no beach). This would (or shall I say "should") make beach camping impossible. But then I would never camp on the beach during an event that would cause the tide to completely overtake the beach, but people do it all the time.
I believe you're right though, if you pay attention, it should be relatively safe. I just can't get her to buy in when she sees these pictures and videos of people getting stuck.
