Blue Tote Nightmare

Like we all do, I was sitting at my campsite yesterday afternoon watching a new arrival backing in and unhitching their TV/TT. At one point during the set-up process one of the kids opened up the TT entry door an screamed for her Dad. My interest no peaked, I watched the young girl's dad go into the TT and come out wheeling a large blue waste tote.

Apparently the tote still had some waste in it that ended up spilling all over the TT floor during the trip to the CG.

Guess someone will have learned to either put it in the bed of the truck or make sure the lids are on tight..

I don't own a tote myself, but I was surprised that someone would actually transport it inside the TT.

I own a tote and it never goes in my TT!

I have only emptied black water a few times during its life, but when I have it gets seriously rinsed.

Why would anyone think transporting that inside the trailer would be a good idea? Just when you think you have seen/heard it all!

But when I do....it sure as H&11 ain't inside the camper.....

Apparently we all agree that a blue tote belongs in the truck bed. You can add a touch of class and lash it to the ladder too.

A few years ago we saw a newby with a huge new motorhome empty his tank into a blue tote. Unfortunately for him he had over 30 gallons of black water and a 15 gallon tote. He hooked it up, pulled the handle and went inside for a cold brew while it drained. Needless to say the park rangers were not impressed.

I keep mine inside, but pull my camper with a Jeep Wrangler. If I had a truck, it would go in the back. My blue tub never gets black stuff unless it is a near emergency. It always gets heavily washed in and out too! Generally speaking with our family of four, I can get 4 full days out of the black tank. They grey tank on the other hand... Showers kill it fast... If my wife does a shower, it's full!

Mine goes inside the tt as well. Like you mine is heavily washed as well and only used for grey. The black will go a week but we only stay for 5 days at a time. My 25 gallon tote n store fits nicely inside the 35x50 garbage bags and I can usually find a space in the truck bed when going home where it gets sanitized again.

I will also go against the grain here as well as mine is kept inside, but its NEVER had black water in it and is always thouroughly cleaned.

I always carry my tote inside the trailer.

1. It has never contained p o o p, only gray water.
2. It is always thoroughly rinsed before being put in the trailer.
3. It is always empty before being put in the trailer...kind of heavy when liquid is present.
4. It is on the floor in the horizontal position.
5. The caps are securely in place.

No problem.

I'll also chime in and say that in the past I've kept mine secured vertically in the shower (Barker 42 gallon) with a Velcro strap. It's been used for black and gray tanks. It's always thoroughly cleaned and caps secured. No issues so far. I will admit though that we figured out real fast that full hookup is well worth the price of admission and rarely camp without it now The Barker only gets used for special occasions.

Because we have an Explorer (SUV), I don't have the luxury of just throwing the poop lagoon into the bed of a truck. The few times we have brought it with us, we transport it inside the TT. It isn't used for black water, either--only grey. Regardless, when we get home from the camping trip, it gets 1/2 gallon of bleach and the rest is filled with clean water. I'll let it sit for 3 or 4 days before I empty it. And then I clean it again. In a week of camping, we may need to empty our grey tank 4 times or so, and we rarely--if ever--use the toilet, so the black tank being full is never an issue. I'm not one to empty the grey tank onto the ground while camping, as I've seen some folks do, so the blue tote really comes in handy for us. Happy Camping!!

In re-reading my answer, I ment to say I carry it inside the trailer storage not inside the living area. The 5er I have has a good sized basement storage plus a smaller one in the back under the bunks. I am sure some have no other place other than the living area and taking all the steps listed, I don't see a problem carrying it inside. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do!
