I remember saying to my mom " I am going for a bike ride" and that was good enough. Born in 1966.

50's

We had real friends; not "Facebook" friends. We organized our own baseball & football games - our street against your street. Every couple of weeks during the summer, our parents would get together and gab in the front yard after dinner. On those evenings, we were allowed to stay outside after the street lights came on. I remember some great games of hide & seek, kick-the-can, and tag on those evenings. And we actually had toy guns and played WAR!:

Yeah we did all that stuff plus built forts back in the woods out of anything we could find, had a paper route so I biked (without a helmet) the whole neighborhood by myself delivering them, we biked to the store, drank from the hose, played hockey on the frozen ponds, rode in the back of pickup trucks, had 6 channels on the TV, rotary phones, no video games or ipods and yet somehow we survived!

Come on folks, how about the 40's? New that I had reached senior status, but its a real insult to be left off a discussion about the good ol days. Guess I'll reach for the walker and drag myself out on the deck so I can oggle at my White Hawk.

For the record, I may have had the last rotary dial corded phone installed in Indianapolis up until maybe 2000, much to the embarrasment of my children. Refused to pay for touch tone and actually had the service for 3 or 4 years [without paying] because the phone company had eliminated the old rotary switching equipment. They had to upgrade my service even though I refused to pay for it. Now I may be one of the last owners / users of a NON smart phone. My phone doesn't have apps or gps nav, but it worked in Alaska, Oregon mtns, and on Dale Hollow Lake [home] where you see I phone users looking for bars on there fancy phones.

Ah that W Hawk looks inviting out back. Wish I could make it off the deck w/ the walker.

I was born in 1979 and did most of these things as well. When it was time for dinner my mom just shouted out the back door and every body else's moms would echo it until I showed up. The rule was if it was not lightning or below zero degrees out I had better play outside.

Brassdogs, I still have a flip phone (been out of contract for 4 years and proud of it) but that is because I would rather spend my money on camping!

I can't believe they left out riding in the back of a pickup truck, and seat belts were something that just rattled in the car a lot.

Born in 73, and we done those things and more.

We had a paper sack full of seat belts that my dad removed from the old Rambler station wagon when I was a kid. I never wore seat belts until 1977 after I was in a car crash and survived!

My folks had a rotary phone into the 1990's. Once when I was visiting and calling to my own home to talk to my wife and kids, I tried to use my Sprint calling card ( so as not to charge a long distance call to my folks). I dialed the Sprint 800 number, which then instructed me to enter my calling card number. Of course I couldn't do that because it would not accept rotary phone "clicks". And there was no way to get a live person on their 800 number. I finally found a local number for a Sprint brick and mortar store and called them. They gave me a number where I could call to get a real live person in customer service. I called him and explained my situation. His response was that I could NOT use a rotary phone to place a Sprint long distance call because rotary phones were obsolete and had been for well over ten years.

My response was "well they may be obsolete, but I'm talking to you on one!"
