By-pass NYC,NY

I'm planning a trip from Washington DC to northwest RI (Pascoag). Can anyone help me with directions from Jersey Turnpike around NYC,to I-84 in Danbury CT? I'll be dragging the 5th wheel, and I sure don't want to drive I95 through the City.

Have you tried Google maps and then manually drag around NYC? I did that and it found an alternative route.

Here's an example. Adds 110 miles to the trip but you circumvent a lot of the really busy areas around NYC.

If you have a Tom Tom or Garmin you can pick a smaller town and plan a route to it. Then pick another and do it again. You should be able to chart a route that way.

There are a few options. First you are not going through NYC, but you will need to cross a bridge over the Hudson River. There are a few options.
1. bite the bullet and just go over the GWB and take 95 all the way. Always major delays and there are major tolls to pay in doing so.
2. Washington DC, Baltimore, NJ Tpke and GWB corss bronx expy are nightmares during certain times of the day and year. There is always construction all along the route and you could be idle for hours over the entire route. If you can do it over the night and get threw NYC area before 5AM you would not hit many delays in doing so.
Depending on the time you have you could take the scenic route through PA and then shoot across on 84. Although it's 2 hours longer in time I think the traffic you hit will more than equal that if you drive during daylight hours on the 95 route. NJ Tpke can be brutal once you cross the DEMBBridge. It goes down to 2 lanes for about 30 miles with construction in place right now to expand that route. If you put a stop in the middle there is a KOA in Newberg, NY along that route right about 5-6 hours in.

If you don't have one already get an EZ-pass for your TV and 5'er so you can breeze through tolls and save off the cash rate. I have a special blue tag for my setup. Some say you can go through with the regular ez-pass but if you do and it's counting axels you could get a ticket if you don't go through the manned cash/ez pass lanes. Those cash lines can cost you 15-20 mins each somedays in the summer.

84 has some steep hills in the NYS region once you cross the bridge.

You just increased my dread factor by about 40% :hihi:

We're heading from Texas but plan to try and circumvent that whole 95 route as much as possible. I've driven that before and even with just a car, truck or van, it's terrible.

Assuming time is no issue, what's your recommendation for the best route from say Allentown, PA to Cape Cod, MA? I can pick up 195 in Providence so that's not my concern. It's that whole area from NJ through to RI.

Where in Pascoag are you going? I just moved from that area (north-west RI) and still have many friends in Burrillville...

Quahoq, The entire tri-state area here is a nightmare. What I have learned is that timing is everything. If you are coming from Allentown, PA you could bypass the greater metro area by heading more north to the Tappen Zee Bridge and then work your way back to the 95 route. Sure you may hit a little bottleneck in Bridgeport but after that it is pretty much smooth sailing.

Three weeks ago I sat on the GWB, cross bronx for 1 hr each way. It is only 5 miles long. First a truck broke down, second a truck didn't know his heights and hit the overpass. You just never know.

To get there from Allentown your most direct route is 78E to 287N to the Tappen Zee then continue on 287E to 95N.

Again timing is everything. 10AM to about 1PM of the day is best for the Tap as there is a morning and afternoon rushhour during workdays. Weekends earlier = better time. They shift the lanes from side to side to accomodate for this but it's still not enough. Same for 95N. Bridgeport to Westfield can jam up during peak travel times so do your best to avoid them.

Hope this helps.

Thanks 3... I'll play around with that recommended route and timing to see how I can make it happen. The last time I drove over the GWB and up 95, it was just plain horrible.

That's much better and it only adds like 10 miles!

We do the route from northern NJ to cape cod every summer. Best route is Garden State Parkway to Tappen See bridge,
Rt. 287 north to 95 north towards RI. Maybe from Texas Rt. 81 north to Rt 78 east to Garden State Parkway north and follow about directions. Worst spot is usualy Tappen Zee. The rest not bad. Just do not leave cape cod on Sunday. Traffic is terrible. We leave on a Monday. Much better..

Get to I-81 as soon as you can. The suggestion here adds a hundred miles but at 10 MPG that is five gallons @ say five bucks/gallon this summer or fifty bucks. I had friend tell me it cost him over $100 in tolls in around NYC in 2010 when we went to Maine. I-81 to I-84 is much less congested than the I-95 corridor. Congestion equals stop and go, stop and go equals low fuel mileage and more time. I had rather pull a hundred miles further than deal with the congestion. Also it lowers the driving blood pressure! From Alabama to Maine using the I-81 corridor I think we paid one small toll in New York and avoided all the rest.

I have friend who lives in Branford CT just east NYC. He pulls south every winter and is leaving to go home this Saturday. He takes the I-81 to I-84 then to Danbury then goes south. Drives completely around NYC, says it is quaicker, cheaper and easier.

What I have right now for my planned route is 81N->78E->84E->395N->195E->6E. Sounds pretty convoluted but it appears to be a fairly straight shot around NYC.

Maybe you left something out but how are you getting from 78N to 84E? 287N to 87N to 84E would be the way I would go. There is a toll on 87N NYS Thruway system. There also is a toll on the Newburg Bridge (84E) of about $8.00 maybe less depending on how they class you.

The farther away from metro NYC you stay the better and the less tolls you will pay for sure.

I can vouch for the tolls being brutal in New York/North Jersey area. OUCH.

Just driving my car in 2010, I swear I paid $10 just to cross the GWB.

I might suggest this one, only because some of the local state hwys can have stops and towns that may slow you down considerably. If I can stick to an interstate I would prefer while draggin my unit. If someone can vouch for your route and has done it then I would trust it. This only came out about 15 mins more but at 60-65 and no stopping might just make it better overall.

exit 17 off 87 is home to OCC if you wanted to stop and oogle. My kids got a kick out of when we did it last year. I'm sure there are other great stops along your trek that just happens to be one I know.

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Al...=1,2,3&t=m&z=6

p.s. all the crossings, NYS and NJ tolls increase Jan 1st 2012 due to budgets!

Appreciate that, 3. After a while, it makes your head hurt. Like you, I'd rather stay on an Interstate since gas is expensive enough without needless stopping. Thanks also for the tip on OCC. I didn't know that.

My 2 cents, no refunds given. If at all possible take I81 to I84, second choice, get on I287 in Jersey then take it all the way to NY staying on 87 North to I84. The GW Bridge and Tapan Zee can be horrible depending on the time of day where as I81 / I84 aren't too bad at all. The cost of the toll at the Beacon / Newburgh bridge is far less $. I believe that the GW bridge toll for cash and 4 axles is $52 where as the Beacon is $10, Tappan Zee is $24.75

I am not aware of any campgrounds in Danbury.
