California Proposition 65

WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

How is it that the designation for a certain plot of earthen real estate can possess the intelligence to understand the ramifications of carcinogens?

I have seen this warning on the most ridiculous items. I have seen it on Camco white RV drinking water hoses, sewer hose adapters and electric adapters. Even a ladder.

Obviously the result of out of control lawyers.

Mostly it is a case of CYA by manufacturers who find it easier to apply a sticker than to buck the system. Just look at the first 2-3-4-5 pages in almost any owners manual and see all the warnings and disclaimers. I hate it and like 99% of people I flip thru the pages to get to the real contend. As a result, if there are any real risks I don't read about them. Made it to the age of 66 just using common sense. I'm still pondering about disconnecting my TT from the hitch before chocking the wheels. Hmm!! What harm could there be??

I just peeled a sticker with that warning off a new trash can. I just shook my head and threw it in the new trash can!

I am waiting for the lawyers to finally get this warning mandated in all maternity delivery rooms:

WARNING: Life may be hazardous to your health.

Next to be followed by a requirement to sign a waiver before conception is permitted.

This really happened to me. I take diabetic medication. The prescription bottle has a warning stuck on it; "Do not consume alcohol while taking this medication".

Well, I enjoy a couple of beers occasionally. Like when the camper set up is complete.

So I went to the pharmacist, who I had dealt with for several years, and straight out asked him, "Is this warning label on here for a medical reason or a legal reason?" His response, with a grin, was "Legal"

Bassdogs hit the nail on the head. Lawyers have muddied the water so badly you no longer know what has a real hazard involved and what is there just to boost the lawyers ego and bank account.

Not to get too off track, but if you hear the "side effects" list of drug commercials, you'd rather risk not taking it than have an explosive this, or organ failure that, not to mention having a "over 4-hour" condition. I think you can't sell anything these days without the legal department stamping on their disclaimers.

There has been a lot of money wasted on printing and applying labels that nobody cares about and sadly those costs have been passed along to us the consumers.

Its because we live in a litigious society. Everyone sues for everything and the judges let them.

That said, it says "State of California", which is the same state that had a whole community nearly ban dihydrogen monoxide.

In CA, they are apparently afraid of everything.

A coworker had a windshield shade for his car that had the following printed along the edge: "WARNING! Do Not Operate Vehicle With Shade in Place!"

You have probably seen the sign: "DO NOT STOP ON THE TRACKS" at railroad crossings.

The scary part about that is we are driving on the same roads as the people that actually need that sign!

Kaleefornia is indeed a nation unto itself. Our new WhiteHawk (purchased in Florida) was festooned with tags inside proclaiming the materials and adhesives used in its manufacture were California Air Resources Board 'compliant'. A good thing I suspect compared to snorting formaldehyde off gassing, but the tags were more about Jayco making marketing hay me thinks............

The Prop 65 tags are just easier to blanket apply to a product so they don't violate Prop 65 by accident......and we all pay for the cost of that compliance.

Well that explains buying tire valve stem caps today, in Canada, that told me they cause cancer in California.

Don't get me wrong, cancer isn't funny. But, would I have to eat them?

I am not absolutely certain, but I don't think cancer existed before the invention of lab rats................

It seems that every lawyers dream is a successful class action law suit.

They have certainly crawled out from under their rocks en masse and attacked every medication and medical device that has been marketed in the past 15 years.

This whole thread explains why California is in the hole and Texas is doing great. What worries me is those folks living in their fantasy world will soon move to my state and start screwing it up.

It's already begun. Luckily, most of the Californians I've met (and there's been quite a few) have their head on straight and are more "refugees" than transplants or whatever. Most of them are small business owners, and Cali is not a good place to do business.

On another note, isn't it absolutely stunning how many people die each year being hit by trains or because they didn't wear their seat belt? I just don't understand that...
