Camping and prescriptions

During the winter, my doctor gave me the news that I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, and gave me a prescription for that. This didn't come as a surprise, since this is something that runs in the family. But it is causing me to eat healthier and get more exercise. Just one little capsule in the morning and I'm good to go.

Over the past few months, remembering to take the pills has become part of my weekday routine; on the weekends, I have to actively remember to take them, since on the weekends my routine regularly changes. And I've learned the hard way what happens if I forget to take them! Now that camping season is upon us, I don't want to suddenly remember that I've forgotten to bring the medication when we're 2+ hours from home.

What do others in the same boat do to remember even bringing their medications along while camping, and to actually take them as prescribed? We found that as we're packing for a trip, we're bringing the same items along every time, so we have a "master list" of stuff to pack. I'll add my BP medication to that list.

Actually, our method is very old school: We take enough prescription medication along for the duration of our trip (thankfully, our Dr. and our veterinarian are OK with this) and put them in those plastic 7-day medication holders. I laughed when my folks used them, but now I know why.

And, yes, it's still possible to forget, but it doesn't happen very often any more and we know exactly what wasn't taken and when.

We could use our cell phones for reminders, but haven't resorted to that (yet?).

Here's what I use.

Talking Alarm alerts users when it's time to take their medication, Alarm sounds periodically until special 'alarm acknowledged' button is pressed, Loud and Extra Loud sound settings ensure the alarm is heard Large-Type Display makes viewing the date, day and time easy.

Up to 4 Daily Alarms (Morning, Afternoon, Evening, Night)

My routine is to get my coffee maker ready the night before even when camping. I put the seven day container right beside my coffee cup so its just a good routine for me since I have to take a pill at bedtime as well anyway.

We use our formal dining room table as our staging area during the week before. So every time you think of something go put it on the table. That way when it's time to load up most everything is there ready to go

I use an inexpensive 7 day pill holder at home and away. It works great, they even have them for a monthly supply. We always get a 90 day supply and find it is much less expensive and less chance of running out while away.

Taking them is a regimen only you can establish not matter which method you have to remind you.

Look at it this way, blood pressure medication is for you so it must be important.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'll probably use a combination of them. This is still new to me, having to take medication on a schedule. I have some alarms set on my watch as a reminder that it's time to leave for work, etc, so I might use one of those as a reminder that it's time to take it.

Remembering to take the meds with us camping and taking them has not been a problem.

My wife's problem is created by state/federal law, pharmacy rules, insurance restrictions and doctor preferences. She is on pain medication transdermal patches and hydrocodone. Law will not allow refills. Doctor must write a new prescription every month. He will only do it 3 days before she runs out. Insurance won't pay for refills any sooner than 28 days from last refill.

When you go camping sometimes these things generate real problems.

I actually ran out of my medication during our trip last year. Didn't realize I was running out. I looked up a pharmacy in Moab, UT, called my Dr. and had them call in the prescription there. I picked it up the next day when we got there. Piece O' Cake.

We have done that and also had the pharmacy transfer the prescription to the local store for the refill.

My meds (BP) is the first thing I load in the RV. I use one of the 7 day pill containers as mentioned above.. It sits on the kitchen table so I don't forget to take them.. I also have my multi vitamin in the same pill container.. BUT DONT TAKE THEM AT THE SAME TIME.. wait 2 hours between a multi vitamin and BP meds.. for max effect of the BP meds...
