Camping budget cuts....

With the current trend of gas and diesel prices edging up and up, is your camping gonna suffer or are you making cuts elsewhere to fund the extra costs?

(Just thought it would be good topic for discussion, :blah: )

We are planning on doing more camping in Washington State. Cheaper food, cheaper gas, cheaper beer, duty free stuff on the way home. There are some awesome State parks within 1.5 hours of my house, I live 5 miles from the border crossing. We have a trip planned for the Interior of BC for a week in July and most of the others we are heading south. Just to compare prices. It is usually closer for me to go camping in Washington than BC. There is very little within an hour of where I live but lots about 3+ hours away in BC. In Washington I can camp at a number of State parks on the Ocean within 2 hours.

Gas in BC $4.83 per US gal. Washington State last time I went thru was $3.87 I believe.

Cheese. 5lb Cheddar $5 in Wash. in BC 2lb Cheddar $12
Milk 1gal $2 in Wash. in BC almost $5
Eggs $1.50 in Wash. around $3 in BC

Beer in BC 24 pack of Bud $40, in Wash. $18 sometimes less
Duty free Liquor 40 oz Vodka $17 in BC liquor store $38.

I will NOT sacrafice my camping trips because of the fuel prices!
IF they raise the fuel prices above $8.00 / gallon, I may think about it, but not until then!!!

Do not get me wrong, I am upset about the price of fuel, but my family vacations and memories come before any price of fuel. I will camp closer to home, but still go camping!!!

I'm going to be more diligent about planning things out next trip. I'm just finishing up my big ass winter maiden voyage with my new Dodge and Jayco. I've put over 13,000 miles on my truck since November. That was without any planning. I just went where I felt like going, lots of times not even knowing where I'd stop for the night until I found a place.

But when I leave for my trip to Moab-Spokane-Seattle the end of May, I'll have everything planned out. The route, the stops where I camp, and make sure I have all the supplies I need before I hit each stop so I don't have to make many side trips.

And I plan to do a lot more boondocking. Free camping in National Forests will be what I'll try to do mostly. That'll save some money.

And I'll drive slower and more carefully to get that extra mile or two per gallon. Today I drove mostly on the slower side for me (55-65), and ended up averaging about 11 mpg, which is pretty good for my rig.

One thing I won't scrimp on is my beer. I've had my quota of cheap beer in my lifetime. I'm going to continue splurging on Bud Light.

I will likely be making a few weekend trips to areas and parks 100 to 120 miles from home rather than out of state this year. These are "tank" trips for me. Of course a tank trip today will cost me $92.00 and this will be more as diesel goes up, but I'm going camping...even at $5.00 a gallon.

Like Myself I plan on still going out camping... But I'm going to do much more in the state of Idaho and a lot of short trips even in my local area. I've got several camp grounds with in 20 miles of the house that I would still enjoy.

As for the fuel prices the more they go up the slower I'm going to drive. When the prices get over $5 a gallon I can garantee I will not be driving faster than 45 MPH... Nice thing Idaho doesn't have a minimum speed limit laws!

Money's tight times are hard.... I boondock 99.99% of the time... Been in the trailer since Oct 19 and not paid (or stayed) for one single night at a campground.

We spend the summers on our river lot in North Idaho. Winters in Parker Az. It will cost about $200 more comming and going this year.

Good camping close to home

I am fortunate to have several Alabama and Tenn State Parks within a 100 miles of home. I can do a two night weekender for a $100 TO $200 total. Hotdogs and beans a half tank of gas.
