Yeah. The crab in your signature appears to be a #1 Jimmy, but I was unable to see the bottom side to confirm.
For those who might want to "brush up" on their blue crab terminology and knowledge, here's a link.

I must confess I did not catch the crab in the signature pic. I got that one off the net. That is a male crab or Jimmy. A mature female is a called Sook. We catch our crabs mainly on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. At times we also work on the smaller seaside bays inside the barrier islands of the Eastern Shore. You may have heard of Chincoteague which is one such barrier island nearby and home of the world famous Chincoteague ponies. Our main commodity is soft crabs, which are crabs that shed thier hard shell in order to grow and become soft for a few hours before turning hard again. We hold
"peelers" which are crabs nearing the shedding process, in shedding tanks and remove them every so many hours. That operation goes from late April into early October non stop, 7 days a week making long distant camping trips a virtual impossibility for me during this season. Sometimes I tow my trailer to a nearby CG, setup and tell the DW you and the kids are on your own til I can get back. And then at times I stay the night and have to leave the CG at 4 am to get to work on time. But I have help that can cover me once in awhile. This is why we do a bunch of Fall camping, when things slow up for me. But like other self employed folks ya gotta make it while its there. Hope I didnt ramble on too much, -Lee

Thanks, Lee! And, no, you were not rambling on. It's was very informative. My grandparents lived in Baltimore and when we (living in western PA) went to visit them, we'd have steamed crabs, crab cakes, crab soup, crab (you name it) while we were there. As a child, it was amazing to watch my grandfather pick up a live crab, de-shell, clean, quarter and toss it into the soup pot- all with his bare hands.
I enjoy a good soft shell crab sandwich. What's really fun, though, is to eat one in front of someone who's not familiar it. It really grosses them out with all the legs dangling outside the bun.
One of my two sons lives on MD's eastern shore near Salisbury. When we visit him, we always try to "be crabby" while we're there. I even brought back two pounds of crabmeat home with me on the last visit because it USA crabmeat. Unfortunately, most of the crabmeat available here is of foreign origin which I shy away from.
Hmmm... maybe It's me now doing the rambling.

Steamed hard crabs hot out of the kettle and REAL crab cakes made with REAL crabmeat, not that cheesy imported stuff, are my favorite seafoods. Last Memorial day and Labor Day we had crab feasts while camping with our friends in nearby Pocomoke River State Park (only about 30 miles South of Salisbury). I supplied the crabs and they supplied the fixins and beer. It don`t get any better then that! -Lee

I've never been to Pocomoke River, but I've gone past it on US 113 while on my way to Rehoboth Beach from the Outer Banks. I've also camped at Cherrystone a couple of times back in the 1990's.
I guess when crabbing season starts, we won't see so much of you on the boards.

This is a picture of crab pots by the Jayco!. Specifically the one on the left is a Hard Crab Pot mainly for catching hard crabs. The one on the right is a Peeler Pot for peelers although we do catch hard crabs in them as a bycatch. Crabs enter through the funnels at the bottom, work their way through a hole to the upstairs and are dumped out by releasing a hook at the top of the pot that holds the opening shut. The hard crab pots are baited in a "bait box" that`s in the middle bottom of the pot, usually with menhaden fish or herring. Peelers enter the Peeler pot either to look for a place to hide and shed or females at times are attracted to males in the pot and are looking to mate after they shed. When male and female get together we call them "doublers" because they double up several days before the female sheds and until the female shell gets hard again and then the male releases the female. Well enough lessons for today. The other pic is of one of my 2 crabbing boats, the Four Sons -Lee

Pocomoke River SP actually has 2 CG`s, one on each side of the river, miles apart! The smaller one is Milburn Landing and the larger one with more amenities and loops is Shad Landing. You passed Shad on 113. Milburn is off of RT 13. We`ve been to both places a bunch of times.
If you ever get down this way again try Kiptopeke SP. Just a few miles south of Cherrystone and I believe the 3rd most visited SP in VA, just above the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Nice.
I won`t have time to post as much when I get busy but I will always find some time to shoot the breeze and check out the forums! Just not until late in the day. Very friendly and easy going folks on this forum and I gotta see what they`re up to! . -Lee

Is that in honor of Saint Patrick ?
And the crabs are somewhat green in places too. Very fitting.

This is a pic of "The Crabhouse", lying dormant for the Winter. Crab shedding operations like this which are accessible only by boat are becoming increasingly rare, and used to be the norm. This one is about 45 yrs old, I`ve had it since 1982. Crabs used to be held in floats in the water which was much more labor intensive. Today crabs are held in 4'x8' tanks with water being pumped to them 24/7 until they shed and become soft. We have 55 such tanks, 5 rows of 11. I wish I had some digital pics of the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd in 1999 and Gloria in 1985. The water was up to the window level. Tanks, wire, pipe and docking, etc was sent up the creek by the storm surge. Pumps went under water while still running. It looked like a bomb was dropped there. We found tanks washed up in a Farmers field, some still had crabs in them! What a mess, I shudder to think about it. But we always rebuild and carry on...

Sounds good. If we drink enough beer first, we won`t care where the crabs came from!
