Even possible?

So the other day when I was walking out of the bank I saw (unless I was seeing things) a Honda Odyssey pulling a older Airstream land yacht that was a good 28-30'. I did see a WDH of some sorts as it drive by but would of thought a mini van like that would never make it up the up coming bridge. Am I missing something with these mini-vans?

I can tell you from experience ( I own an Odyssey) that the models built prior to 2006 would not handle the load for very long. The earlier models had very weak transmissions. Honda thought it would be a good idea to take a high output VTech engine, mate it to the same tranny that is in the Accord car and then stuff them into a 5000 lb van that hauls a lot of people and stuff. More lawsuits, complaints and forums lit up with flames than you could imagine from early Odyssey owners.

Now, the Vtech engine rocks for sure. That thing will put out the torque and the ponies.... and when mated to that particular tranny in a light little car will whip you around very fast. Just didn't work with a big, heavy, people hauling van.

I do not know what tranny was dropped into the newer Odysseys. Maybe they can take the stress.... Personally, I wouldn't pull anything more than a small utility trailer or maybe a light Pop Up with an Odyssey.

There is an RV shop in Canada that will setup anything to tow. He contends that mini-vans and passenger cars can safely and efficiently tow large trailers.

While I'm not one to dismiss using a mini-van to tow a small travel trailer or hybrid that's within the limits of the TV (I've done it myself), pushing something beyond its rated limits is not only going to shorten the life of the vehicle, you can leave yourself open to liability issues should something really bad happen and people get hurt or killed.

When all is said and done, the best towing experience is still going to be when you stay within limits and follow the so-called 1k lb. rule.

You can pretty much set up anything to tow, but the main concern that was overlooked was the SAFETY of the combined package. The Odyssey suspension is not set up for any major towing (had one), and I had to add air bags in the rear, for a 19' Trail Manor trailer, and yes Honda needed to replace the transmission (warranty of course). The local dealer had already replaced over 200 automatic transmissions in the Odyssey. The newer models have a different trans, so I am told.

I saw a Honda Odyssey pulling about a 30 foot Airstream when we were in Brunswick, GA last month.
The Van and Airstream had Minnesota plates on it.
I thought it looked odd, did not get to see it hooked up and leave.

So to answer you question, I guess it is possible.
