Favorite Campfire Food???
I've been thinking about this but I was afraid to put it in the Cooking thread.....I'm not really a cook. What is your favorite thing to fix over the campfire? We get creative with the smores! Our favorite is made with Reese's peanut butter cups followed by Peppermint Patty smores and the old stand-by Hershey bars. We also like to take powdered sugar donut holes and toast them just enough so the sugar gets a little crusty - yum! DH really likes cherry pies with powdered sugar sprinkled on top. I like the apple pies with sugar and cinnamon. It's really all about the eating, right? Share your favorites - we could use some new ideas!

I like pizza sandwichs with sausage, mushrooms, peppers, sauce and cheese inside two pieces of texas toast buttered on the outside. Put it in a cast iron pie maker and wash it down with a cold one.

Yeah - love the cast iron pie makers! Toasted cheese and ham by day, fruit pie by night.
I tell you though - my favorite are the camp sites that have the grill built into the camp fire ring. I love cooking a big thick steak over a hot oak fire - mmmmmm........

Oh - forgot to mention - I found this site the other day and have started watching a few videos. I have somewhat gotten in a cooking rut and was looking for some fun stuff for the kids....

My favorite camping food is COOKED. I don't care what it is as long as I don't have to cook it.

I think I was having a sweet tooth attack last night with my original post! The steaks look wonderful and I shouldn't be this hungry this early in the morning We also like to grill various veggies and diced potatoes over the fire. When do we eat???

Prepare instant mashed potatoes (I like the ones with garlic). Place a blob of the potatoes on tin foil, flatten out and on top of the potatoes you can add toppings like onions or mustard. On top of that put a hot dog. Wrap the tinfoil around the food and place on coals. It's a good snack item.

My son taught us how to make "Hobo fish" when he returned from a scout campout. We wrapped some fish (we bought ours from the store!), sliced zucchini squash, onions, and spice with aluminum foil wrapped twice. We placed it above the campfire for maybe 15 minutes. Opened the foil (carefully so not to get burned) and ate! Once we actually had to put the foil write on the fire because we didn't have a rack... but still turned out ok

Ok, here is a secret forumla. 1 large round steak, a box of stuffing mix of your choice, aluminum foil, salt, pepper, garlic salt. Lay the steak on the foil. Pile on the stuffing. Season, fold the steak over, and wrap with foil. Place the foil in the fire pit on the edge and turn every few minutes.

Dutch Oven Fruit Cobbler
My favorite is one that my uncle taught me. Put a liner in your Dutch oven, and put a yellow cake mix in the bottom. Cover this with your favorite canned fruit (we use fruit ****tail). Dust with light brown sugar and put in coals with coals on lid. Juices from ****tail blend in with cake mix...delicious!!!!

Man, those sound good! Me thinks I need to invest in a Dutch oven and a cast iron skillet! Really great ideas to try, thanks!

Cut potatoes french fry style, slice red, green and yellow peppers, add sliced onion and thinly sliced carrots and a nice thick lean hamburger. Wrap all together in heavy duty foil with a couple dabs of butter (make sure it is sealed) place packet on grill for about 15 minutes and flip for another 15 minutes. YUM, YUM

BBQ Ribs over campfire coals. Last time we did this was while at NASCAR. It was 96 degrees and other campers were wondering why those crazy New Englanders we starting a campfire in the heat of Florida. Once they smell the ribs they understood we had our neighbors over for dinner. No, we did NOT eat by the campfire!
