Ok...ok...I know it is really no laughing matter....but I saw this and just could not help but chuckle....being from Tennessee I can appreciate it -- a big earthquake around here could cause hundreds of dollars worth of damage!

Ha Ha Ha there`s a comic in every crowd. I didn`t even have a chair turnover. But crabbing was not very good after the quake, I suppose they felt it.

No aftershocks were felt here. Just "the big one". But I don`t like the looks of Irene.

I was watching the news here in Calgary Alberta last night and they showed a flick of the seismic meters at the University of Calgary and lo and behold we had a slight tremor here. Don't think anyone would have felt it but just shows how powerful these things can be.

Terry, it is a good thing you don't live in New Orleans. FEMA might have to come back and spend more govt money. Why did only one chair tip and is there any hidden damage to the others? Lots of grant study money could help with the local ecomony.

When we were kids my cousins and I were jumping on the couch at my grandmother's house. She yelled to stop jumping because we were shaking the house. We stopped jumping and the house kept shaking. We thought it was cool until someone yelled EARTHQUAKE!

I remember a time when my son was a baby that I was laying in our 'water bed' to take a nap (good ol' 70's!). The bed was still, but started to move as though someone had poked it with their fist. But no one else was in the house at that time! Of course looking at something hanging from the ceiling confirmed it was indeed a quake.
Meanwhile, Don was out 'plinking' (target shooting at the range). He said just as he pulled the trigger the target moved enough that his center shot was toward the outside of the target (all the previous ones were dead center) LOL

It was pretty strong here in Central Virginia. I even had some damage from it. I actually am one of few in these parts with earthquake coverage; however, the deductible for earthquake damage is 10% of the value of the dwelling, so as you can imagine that is one hefty deductible!
Prior to our closing on the house in 2003 we had another one, much smaller and shorter in duration than this one.

Yes you were much closer to the epicenter. It was a strange sensation, even this far East.

Typically, a way you would know if you are near the epicenter is if you experience more of a "rolling" sensation vs a jolting. Back in the Northridge quake MLK day in 1994, we were up in Big Bear Mountain staying on the second floor of a hotel. Our last morning sleeping as we were heading home that day. We were awoken by a strong shaking. We looked at each other and immediately said to each other that this was a BIG one somewhere as we felt it strongly as a rolling quake. Turned on the news to find out that Northridge (Los Angeles area) just had a 6.7 quake. We were about an hours drive from there. Good thing we had a full tank of gas, because all the electricity was out on our route home which went by Northridge. Even in Santa Barbara, we couldn't get gas (we had to head home at 8am so had no choice than to be on the road). As we went through Northridge, we were curious enough to pull off and drive down one of the boulevards. I was shocked at the damage/destruction that resulted from it. Just then at the stoplight a 5.0 hit. It was a major jerking/jolting feeling. Scary stuff. We hit the freeway and was glad to get home.

I've only experienced one. Back in the spring of 1988 my soon-to-be wife and I were opening a box of camping gear from Bass Pro Shops sitting on the basement floor when I noticed a rumble and some stuff hanging from the floor joists swinging...the strangest feeling I ever had. This quake originated in Missouri somewhere and was felt through Michigan.

there have now been 24 aftershocks and the epicenter area loss total so far is 70 million dollars. Two schools were devastated and unusable.

I am in Virginia too, and was at work when it happened. Very very scary being in a huge, all glass building that starts shaking and steadily gets faster and faster!
I grabbed my purse and got out of there!
