Gas rising again, nearly at parity with diesel

I just filled my truck today and diesel here is $4.04 IT takes me 120 gal of diesel to get to Arizona. at $4.00 a gallon it is $480 at $4.20 a gallon it is $504. I will not stay home and shovel snow over $24.

Best attitude I have heard about it. Does no good to complain about it, and it's not like you're not going to stop driving just because it goes up 10¢/gallon.

Refueled yesterday, 09/13/2013. Diesel was $3.959/gal. here in western PA. However, I saved $0.50/gal. using my Giant Eagle Advantage card so I paid only $3.459/gal.- a savings of $10.98 on 21.971 gallons.

OK FP, where do I get one of those cards? MY rewards credit card pays 3% back on gas purchases which comes to about 10 cents per gallon at current prices. But that`s chicken feed to what you are getting.

I also get 3% off but usually fuel up at Costco. I was shocked that Costco was nearly $1 per gallon cheaper than other fuel stations. On our way down we paid about $3.59 and when we left we paid $3.29 in Medford OR. It went down but is climbing again. Washington state fuel taxes are higher than OR but OR doesen't have self serve. Fortunately I added a 60 gallon auxiallary fuel tank to our Greyhawk so we can pick and choose where to fill up.

Here! The only problem is there isn't a Giant Eagle in your area and it's a long ride to the nearest one I could find which is in Frederick, MD. The program is called "Fuelperks". Basically, you earn a 10 cent discount off the posted price per gallon on gasoline/diesel for every $50 you spend in their stores. So, in easy math, I purchased $250 in merchandise to earn the 50 cent discount. You can buy up to 30 gallons of fuel at the discounted price at any GetGo (which is similar to your WaWa, Royal Farms, etc). Sometimes the store runs specials like earning 20 cents on every $50 you spend on gift cards or even getting a dollar off for having new prescription filled at their pharmacy. If you buy enough, you can actually earn enough discounts to get you a free tank of fuel. The only catch is that you have only 90 days from the date the discount is earned to use it.

Up until last spring, they also had a "FoodPerks" program where you earned a 1% discount on your total Giant Eagle food bill for every 10 gallons of fuel you purchased at GetGo.

BTW- If you have no FuelPerks discounts available, the GetGo will give you a 3 cent per gallon discount by scanning your Giant Eagle Advantage card.

There is another super market chain, Shop 'n Save, here in western PA that offers pretty much the same deal as Giant Eagle but you refuel at Sunoco stations to use your accumulated discount. Unfortunately, owners of vehicles with small fuel tanks don't benefit as much from these programs because the discount doesn't carryover for any unused portion of the 30 gallons you're entitled to. Also, you're not allowed (store rule, not a law) to refuel another vehicle at the same pump. However, I've watched people come in with an armada of fuel cans to get as much of what's left of the 30 gallons they're entitled to and witnessed others who would park a car on each side of the filling island and while one "pretends" they're refueling, the other fills their vehicle using the discount and then passes the nozzle over to the other person who fills their tank with what remains of the 30 gallons.

This is one time I really miss my old 96 F-250 because it had two 18 gallon tanks so I always got my full 30 gallons at the pump. The GMC's tank only holds 26 gallons and I usually have about three gallons remaining in the tank when I refuel, so, on average, I only get about 23 of the 30 gallons I'm entitled to.

When we move to our future "home base" in the Laurel Highlands of Fayette County, our grocery shopping habits will change dramatically as the closest Giant Eagle and GetGo (which doesn't sell diesel) is 20 miles away. The closest Shop 'n Save is 17 miles, but the closest Sunoco station (that has diesel) is only a little over two. The nearest Walmart is about 20 miles away. We definitely want to make sure we don't accidentally omit something from our shopping list that convenience stores don't stock as it's a long ride to go back and get it.

Gas down to 3.15 here now, cheapest its been for some time. Diesel is hanging tough though at about 3.80

Regular gas in the far northern suburbs of Chicago is $3.43. I have seen it for up to 50 cents more per gallon in other parts of metro-Chicago. The Gas Buddy app on the phone is a must around here as prices can vary widely in a small geographic area. Glad I get about 15 mpg towing!
