GEOCACHING, sounds interesting.

Geocaching seems like it would be a great activity to add to a camping trip, especially if one travels to different areas.

Never tried it myself, but think I will give it a shot next summer while camping at different locations. I have a 16 year old Garmin 45 hand-held GPS that should get me started on hunting down some easy caches. But that new Garmin 62s sure looks like a nice GPS.......

After visiting the Geocaching web site (link below) and entering in my zip code, I was amazed at how many hidden caches there are just around my home town! Wonder what folks have hidden in these boxes??

If your not familiar with geocaching, check out the short video at the following web site:

Official Geocaching web site: http://www.geocaching.com/

Anyone an avid geocacher?

That is something my younger son has been doing for several years. In 2007 he changed jobs from Wisconsin to Washington and I flew up and drove across country with him. We tent camped and stopped and found several caches along the way, at least one in each state we passed through.

The people that are into it big time, as he is, find a lot of enjoyment in it. A good clean inexpensive way to pass the time. He is always finding "hidden" water falls, nice walking trails and other neat places nearby that one would normally never get to experience because they are not "tourist" places but hidden gems in the wild.

Our son now lives nearby and he maintains several caches in the area. One is near our house called the "unfinished out house" and another on an island in the lake for which you have to have a boat to access.

We have been caching (Geocaching) since Nov. 2004 and love it, we have 2167 finds and have hidden 97 caches. If you have any questions about Geocaching ask away. Here is our profile page on the Geocaching web site.

We geocache occasionally. We usually use it an an excuse to take a hike somewhere and have a goal. A healty and relatively inexpensive way to pass a few hours.

hammerdown,

Come next spring I may take you up on that

In the meantime I plan to register and lurk around the web site in the near future.

I have been following a couple on datastormusers.com that I know who geocache and it seems quite interesting. Hopefully when we become semifulltimers, if we ever do, I would like to get in to it.

I have accidently found several Geocashes in the desert. A lot of people in Az are really into it. Many require a 4x4 to access.

Clutch,

What's really interesting is the creativity some people put into their hidden containers. U-Tube has a lot of video's on geocaching:

We have been Geocaching since 2001....always a fun thing to do when we are camping. We keep a little bag of goodies in the car so we always have something ready. Our camping friends were just amazed when we told them about it and took them on some runs.

What I like best about it is that you end up finding all kinds of cool places that you would have never know existed. I actually use the Geocache app on my phone so we always have it with us.

A Geocaching phone too? Is there anything else I need? The GPS in my truck has a hard time finding Norfolk.

I got about 2500 finds-- I love it. I use a Rhino 120, and love the mapping feature. I had (6) .50 cal ammo caches at one point but seems like I had a serial Geo-thief cause he took all six and three replacements I re-stashed and restocked. That kind of turned me off to being the cache'er. Those cans aren't cheap and installing the locks on them plus filling them up with prizes adds up.

Most of the cashes I have found in the desert are ammo boxes. I wondered about low life thieves taking them.

I am a pretty serious GCer when we camp. My BIL and me hit it pretty hard in the summer. I love any excuse to get in the outdoors and geocaching makes it all the more fun.

I have a Garmin eTrex off CL for $40 it's so-so for caching.
Later (about 1 month) I upgraded to a Garmin GPSmap 60 and it's deadly accurate most of the time.

I'd really like to get a new one for paperless GCing.

mcfarmall,

Yep, the little I know about GCing that's one thing that many recommend, thus my earlier comment about the Garmin 62s.

The GPS geeks also give high marks for the Garmin 60 that you recently picked up as well.

I now use my Iphone for geocaching. Works very well. Nice to have all the info at my finger tips, plus the internet to boot! I have 450 finds.

I love it. I've even found some on Manhattan, in Central Park, and even in Mid-Town. It's a great activity, some take you to places to see unique and special places that you'd ordinarily miss.
