Had to defend my love of camping.

Last night, around the Christmas dinner table with the hubby's family, we got on the subject of Hocking Hills, an absolute beauty of a SP in Ohio. We explained how we try to camp there every year for a few days. My 15 yo nephew tells his parents that he would love to do that. My sis-in-law pipes up and tells him how lucky he is because they stay in hotels or houses for their vacations. His Dad then jokes about rednecks and camping. Either not realizing, or forgetting that we own a camper, I explained how luxurious camping can be and how absolutely fun it is. We're the only ones in my hubby's large family of 9 kids who camp. As they've never been camping before, I politely said they should come with us sometime before they decide camping would never be for them. Us campers have quite the following and I would miss (and have) not having our camper on a trip.

I always enjoy those conversations with other family and friends, especially when they think they are 'better off' because their vacations are in hotels.

There is nothing like waking up in the mountains on a cool brisk morning and start a fire to keep you warm while you cook your breakfast outside, and at night to see the billions of stars visible to the naked eye, as not to be washed out from city lights.

They can refer to us as rednecks if they choose, I don't mind... We are the lucky ones!

Maybe they saw Uncle Eddie and his RV in Christmas Vacation too many times and can only stereotype based on a lack of experience or exposure to our type of camping.

No need to defend your love of camping. It is their loss. Camping brings a family closer together. Also, many people think that camping is a poor mans vacation. As most of us here already know, it is not!

X2, X3, X4, X5 and so on! this past year I would guess I spent 50-70 nights in hotels mostly for work. I told my boss after a continous 3 week trip (300 working hours) in November that my goal was not to travel at all in December. I only had one day trip (400 miles of driving for 3 hours of meetings with contractors).

Next time this issue comes up let them watch this short video.

It's been on 60 minutes & 20-20 how hotel rooms are some of filthiest places around.
We sleep on clean sheets- we eat off of clean dinner ware etc... in our RV's.... Not in some hotel room that who knows was splattered on the walls & sheets.
Ugh !!!

Well played!!
I somewhat feel sorry for the 15 year old and the experiences he is missing. Our grandson is 5 and he has been camping with us every summer since he was 2. He can't wait for next summer to go camping, make a campfire, listen to grammy play her guitar, have some 'smores and help grandpa drive the boat.

Hotels have their place if you have a wedding or funeral or something. But for a family vacation?? There is no way in hell we would ever consider such a thing.

Now don't go overselling our joys in camping. We don't want it anymore crowded than it is now at the nicer spots on that river, lake or mountain valley.

We have not spent no more than 2 nights in a motel since our first fifth wheel over 13 years ago. They don't know what they are missing.

My kids (and myself) were brought up with camping as our means of vacationing and so far the kids 13, 16, & 18 still love the camping experience and we have even brought some of their friends along at times to share our love of camping. Anyone who says they dislike camping has not camped with me because if they had, I think they might feel differently.

I also grew up camping. My wife did not. She wanted nothing to do with it. Then we had twin boys. Last year we took a trip to Washington DC and stayed with family. That par was fine but on the way out and back we stayed in a hotel. NEVER AGAIN with kids. After being cooped up in a car for 8 hours the kids went nuts in the room. The pool relived some of their energies but when we got back to the room they tried crawling under the bed, discovered all sorts of things left in the room that the cleaners missed, and started licking things. GROSS! The next spring we bought our PUP. My wife tolerated camping at first but it is growing on her. We talked the other day about something with a bathroom and hard sides. I couldn't be happier.

We love camping, but it's not one or the other for our family. Pretty hard to take my California based family to visit the East Coast or Hawaii with our TT. I too spend 50+ nights traveling for work so I have seen the good, bad and ugly as far as hotels are concerned too.

This idea is so foreign to me. I grew up camping. I spent virtually every waking moment of my youth outside. I've backpacked and paddled my way through some of the most beautiful scenery this country has to offer. I wouldn't trade a single moment of those experiences for even the most posh or luxurious hotel anywhere on earth. Most of my family still camps, my dad and my in-laws both own Class Cs. My brother still does it in a tent as his girls are still in scouts.

We tried the road-trip vacation last year. Stayed in a different hotel in a different city almost every night. While that trip had its merits, and we did see some interesting and beautiful things, it is also one of the primary reasons we now own a Jayco. Now we have a clean bed every night (or if it's not clean, at least it's OURS). We don't have to hunt and hope for a clean restroom stop. Weekend outings are a breeze and we already have some favorite spots. The ONLY downside is that we get pretty bad fuel economy, and traveling at 60 mph can be frustrating sometimes. Other than that, we absolutely LOVE the RV lifestyle and wouldn't have it any other way.

My normal response to this attitude about camping is something along the lines of the stars, fire, and tranquility of a night in the campground. Not to mention waking up to the smells of bacon cooking over an open fire the next morning. I also include the fact that I know what happened in the bed of our camper the night before. I don't get that with the bed in a hotel, and no worries of taking home bed bugs. Not to mention, no bacon.

I think that the hotel crowd is great. More camping spots are open for me.
