HMS Bounty sinks off Cape Hatteras

The replica which was in the 1962 movie and also in one of the"Pirates of the Carribbean"
movies sinks off Cape Hatteras during Sandy. 14 were rescued, one died after being pulled from water, and the Captain is missing.

Been following that & reading the many opinions. Think I come down on the side of those who feel the captain was reckless / foolhardy in going to sea under the circumstances - endangering the crew as well as the Coast Guard rescuers. Some say a "deep draft" vessel is safer at sea in a storm than in port, others say that this doesn't apply to a vessel like the Bounty, which is "underpowered" and evidently did not have backup generation systems.

In the end, a needless loss of life of the one crewmember and likely the captain. I dearly love wooden boats, but the Bounty was not worth one life.

This tall ship and 9 others visited the Duluth, MN harbor the past couple of summers. Truly it was an impressive boat. I don't know a thing about sailing or boats (except my porta-bote!) but I've got to agree with Steverino. There was plenty of warning about this storm and this ship had no business being caught up in it.

Congratulations to the fine servicemen and women of the United States Coast Guard from Elizabeth City, NC Coast Guard Station for saving the crew. It is sad that two crew members died.
