Just Booked An Awesome Site!

There's a great local CG around here that's on the beach. It's our go to CG and often times I'll commute to work while camping because it's not too far.

Anyway, there is one completely awesome site at this CG. You back up to the ocean and the ocean view. To the front of you is a bay. The CG is on a barrier island which is only a few hundred feet wide so you have a great view all around.

Not only that, but it's an end site so that when you walk out of your camper there is no one next to you.

I'm sure no one outside my immediate family can appreciate how giddy I am with the exception of you guys. I can't wait!

Congrats on the awesome site. Sounds nice. If there's wifi available, please post pics while you're there. Or if not, post some when you return.

Have a great time. How long will your stay be?

Of course!

We try to hit this place at least once a month. Most times we'll check in on a Thursday after work and book 4 nights. Even though we have it till Monday morning, we'll leave Sunday night. Seems a lot of people follow that schedule too.

I know the feeling when you get that hard to get site that is just perfect. My family doesn't really get it either. When are you going?

This really is a good time of year to make those plans and reservations. The other end of the spectrum is arriving late and not knowing if you will have a site. Most folks are somewhere in between, but I like the way you do it. And, yes, some people think it's a bit overdone, but most uf us understand.

I've always wanted to camp on Long Island somewhere. I heard it was a very nice experience. When we traveled (tent trailer) with our kids years ago, we skirted NYC. Time schedule kept us from venturing into the city or LI. Someday if we make it up back to NY, we will spend some extra time to camp there

Hither Hills SP (on Long Island) has the most sought after sites in the state of NY. When we camped near Niagara Falls we wanted one of the sites on the shore of Lake Ontario at Four Mile Creek SP. A NYSP representative (very helpful, but I don't remember her name) told us to be logged in and be ready to go at the beginning of the 9 month reservation window, because all those type sites would be "gone in minutes". She was right. (We did get one.)

During our conversation, I asked her if the lake front sites were the most sought after in NY. That's when she told me about Hither Hills. She said all the available sites at Hither Hills are taken within minutes after they become available - all season long. I've never been there, but it looks like a great location.

Well, be sure to ask before coming. lol

The CG I'm talking about in this thread is Smith Point. It's a county park on Long Island. TWA Flight 800 crashed right off shore 16 years ago and there's even a nice memorial there now.

Hither Hills is great and it literally sells out the second it opens. They only have check ins Friday, Saturday and Sunday with about 50 sites available each day for a total of about 150 total. There are absolutely no hookups with the exception of a handful of water spigots scattered around the CG. Make sure you bring plenty of hose to fill your potable water.

Hither Hills is a great vacation CG. It's in a sleepy little fishing town and all of the restaurants have the freshest seafood. Beautiful beaches too. The Hamptons are about 15 minutes away and some great wineries are very close too. If you like to fish, charter boats go out all the time and range from things like fluke up to shark fishing. About the only downside to this CG is that you can't have a fire in the peak season.

Oh, here's a picture from this past summer. I'm sitting at my picnic table and the sand straight ahead is the walkway through the dunes. Not bad. The building behind the van to the left is the bath/shower. I've got this same site this August too. I guess I got the best site at TWO local CG's next season. lol

Heathi

There are still plenty of dates available at Hither Hills in May and June before the school year ends.

Lived in long Island for a year back in 2002 in Manorville, across from the Grumman base. They definitely has some nice beaches and touring the wineries was always a fun adventure. Haven't been back since the day I moved back to mass. Maybe a camping trip to the wineries would be a fun adventure.

I understand your "giddiness" all too well! Loved your pics you posted before. It's easy to see why you love this place. Is this the place where you guys eat so well?!! And, has the wandering deer?

Lol, the pics with the good food are from the guys weekend camping season kickoff. There are some deer there, but they stay away for the most part.

The place with the deer wandering around is a great place on be beach. For the most part, the deer stay away when it's busier. They come out more at the beginning and end of the season when the park is not as full.

It does sound too good to be true! I'm amazed that I was able to get lakefront for our August UP Michigan trip. I can definitely share in your enthusiasm!

Last week I booked 4 nights at Silver Lake SP in western (LP) Michigan and 3 nights at Ludington SP, which is about 45 minutes north of Silver Lake, for the end of June. We love the west coast of Michigan, and everything fills up quickly, so I think I'm fortunate. Next year (2014), we hope to get up to Tahquemenon Falls and Porcupine Mountains for a week or so. Failing that, I'm sure Carnival Cruises will be offered at deep discounts. Poor taste. Happy Camping!!

We hit Platte River and Ludington last August. It took my diligence of checking daily for openings at these CG's to get spots. We had to move sites every 2 days. I guess we got to experience different views. We did finish off our trip at Charles Mears SP, which we all loved. We did that on a whim. We are looking forward to this August's trip to Porcupine and Muskallonge SP's.

Since the CG is so close my parents took a ride out there in the early spring when it was empty and snapped some pics of the great site.
