Little excitement in Myrtle Beach today

Had a quick heavy wind/rain storm roll through today and flipped a few campers at Lakewood and Pirateland. Were camping there next week

Really glad nobody was hurt - and that it wasn't on a weekend when you were there.

We were coming back from Alaska to Atlanta quite a few years ago. We were driving hard/long days to get home because of work Monday.

We pulled into a KOA in Lawrence Kansas after dark, grabbed a quick meal and were about to turn it when the Tornado sirens went off. Everybody went to the Cement block campground office. The Tornado didn't hit the campground directly but from the damage the next morning it had passed within a couple of hundred feet. Every RV in the park that was crossways to the wind was blown over - several were rolled. By pure dumb luck we were parked facing the direction of the wind AND because it was late and we were pulling out again 1st thing, we hadn't unhitched. The Weight Distributing hitch and everything was hooked up - so both the car and trailer were one unit.

But we did notice something interesting the next morning. Based on imprints in the soft soil, the trailer was about 5 feet from where we originally parked it.

Nobody in the park was hurt but there at least 40 units badly damaged and 10 of those were probably totaled. We didn't get much sleep that night helping neighbors gather their belongings and try to find someplace to sleep.

And being from Georgia - when the siren went off we thought "what the heck is that noise" and almost ignored it.

Wow. Great way to ruin a camping trip. We have stayed at Lakewood before. Makes me rethink the ocean front sites now.

Freak storm but then again any site that close to the water will get the addl wind gusts anyways. Funny, we live 1/2mile from pirate land and didnt have that type of wind at the house.

We have stayed at LAKEWOOD many times over the years visiting my family that has a permanent house there. We all try to get together every year in the SEP/OCT time frame. Never any weather issues...

When I heard about this storm I went back four hours on my WX Page and watched it brew up and come through. This was a small thunderhead that had some wind in it haha... Looks like it only lasted a few minutes...

This doesn't happen much there... There was a couple of photos on-line of the over turned trailers. Two at Lakeland and one at next door Pirateland...

We went for a morning walk through Pirateland today and the campers were back upright. The slides were pushed in from the fall the the power pedestal ended up through the window I knew one of the maint guys at the CG and he was heading over to fix the water supply for the site and cable. Says the insurance rep should show up in the next day or so to inspect the damage (totaled i'm sure)
