Just spent 9 days going from Ontario to NY, VT, NH, ME, NB, and then back the same way. What impressed me the most about the entire trip was how well the Duramax pulled the trailer through the Adirondack Mountains. The exhaust brake was incredible. I put the truck in tow mode, and set the cruise control, and let it do its thing.

I even used the hill start assist in Bangor. That's where, if you are on an angle, the brake stays applied for two seconds after you release it, or press the throttle. It came in very handy at one stop light in particular.

We drove up Mount Washington in NH. 6,200 feet! That was an adventure (no, not with the trailer). I had to pull in my mirror so as to not hit the oncoming traffic. They said put it in low gear all the way. I ended up in M2 (manual 2nd gear), and the truck just cruised all the way up. If you are ever in the area I suggest you try it. There is nothing to stop you from going over the edge. No guard rails whatsoever. Not for the faint of heart.

When I bought my truck I considered getting a dually. I'm glad I didn't. I never had one "HOLY CRAP" moment the entire trip. I don't think a dually would have made much difference.

I'm sure the Ford and Dodge would do fine too, but diesel sure is the way to go.

Thanks for the story... Very interresting.
Although not a diesel, our 2010 1500 Ram has hill assist and tow haul and I was wondering how these work during towing. We find going down hill the truck holds the trailer back pretty good without having to touch the breaks a whole lot.
Also, we planned on climbing Mont Washington next summer (sans-trailer) but i am afraid of heights and this will be quite nerve racking for me 8/ but we'll do it

I think, going up Mt Washington, it is actually easier being the driver, because you are in control, and have to look at the road.

Hill assist, brake exhaust...so much more to learn.

If you visit Mt. Washington and don't want to drive up to the top take the Cog railway.

There is a third option for getting up Mt. Washington. They have a shuttle van where they do the driving and you get to look at the scenery.

When we went from a 2500HD SRW to a 3500HD DRW no real big difference in pulling and stopping but it sure is much more stable in the windy Midwest.

Also our Pin Weight is 3,400 lbs.

Nothing to do with fuel prices. I just don't really like Quebec.

Some are nice, but some are not. Just my preference to go around.

You know, in Quebec, and Provinces boardering Quebec, the STOP signs say "ARRET". I was in Paris last year. The STOP signs there say "STOP". That's an example of how stupid things are in Quebec.

Glad your D/A performed well for you! I'm jealous...hill start assist!

I'm sure my wife thought I was a bit daft when I proposed we get a diesel. But, she now likes the perpetual smile on my face when towing with ours.

We are in Ninilchik, AK, waiting to go halibut fishing tomorrow. I've put almost 10,000 miles on my D/A since we left for AK in May. If my tires were not nail magnets (1 pickup and 1 trailer flat), I'd be able to say we've had no problems with either the pickup or our 5W.

I was in Quebec a few years back on business and the big discussion then was the OLF's (I forget what this stands for) requirement that all telephone answering machines have two language messages. Even those of private individuals in their homes where the families only speak one of the two languages. What a zoo.
